British pop-rock band Coldplay performed five shows in India this month – three in Mumbai and two in Ahmedabad (their biggest show ever). From creating a vibrant musical atmosphere to promoting sustainability and inclusivity, the concerts proved to be a memorable experience for fans. The band’s lead vocalist Chris Martin surprised fans with unexpected shout-outs and statements in Indian languages. Here are some highlights.

Speaking in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati
Chris Martin addressed the audience in Hindi, saying, “Mumbai/Ahmedabad mein aakar hume bohot khushi ho rahi hai (We’re happy to be here in Mumbai/Ahmedabad)."
He also attempted to speak in Marathi at the Mumbai concert, saying, “Tumhee saghre aaj chaan distat (You all look beautiful today).” At the Ahmedabad concert, he said in Gujarati, "Tame logo aaje badha sundar laago cho. Hu tamare shahar ma aavyo chu. Kem cho Ahmedabad? (You all look beautiful today. I’ve come to your city. How are you, Ahmedabad?)”
Shout-out to Jasprit Bumrah
Chris Martin’s admiration for Indian cricketer Jasprit Bumrah took centrestage as the singer gave a shout-out to the pacer while on stage. Bumrah finally made an appearance at the Ahmedabad concert on January 26. Martin sang a special song for him.
“O Jasprit Bumrah, my beautiful brother. The best bowler in the whole of cricket. We do not enjoy watching you destroy England, wicket after wicket," he sang, creating a wholesome moment.
Shout-out to Shah Rukh Khan
Chris Martin also gave a shout-out to Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan at one of the Mumbai concerts, saying, “Shah Rukh Khan forever.”
SRK responded to the same, writing on Instagram, "Look at the stars…look how they shine for you…and everything you do! My brother Chris Martin you make me feel special…like your songs!! Love you and a big hug to your team. You are one in a billion my friend. India loves u, @coldplay!!!"
Singing Vande Mataram
At the Ahmedabad concert held on Republic Day, the band surprised fans by singing Vande Mataram and A.R. Rahman’s Maa Tujhe Salaam, drawing appreciation from the crowd.
Sustainability efforts
Apart from unforgettable moments on stage, the concerts have also been appreciated for their sustainability efforts, incorporating measures like free hydration stations, biodegradable and recyclable LED wristbands, among others.
