Good food is not always served at great looking places. New Plantain Leaf, the recently opened restaurant in Thippasandra reinstates this fact.

With lime green walls, simple tables and ochre coloured sofas, the eatery reminds you of those numerous Andhra-style food joints common in the city and highways.

However, our advice is that don't go the looks of New Plantain Leaf.

The ambience may not appeal to you at a first glance but this restaurant will win you over with their offerings of traditional Hyderabadi and Andhra biryani,Guntur chicken, Chicken 65 and more.

In case, you want to break away from the Andhra style then you can also choose from the Chinese and the North Indian dishes that this place offers.

However, being lovers of Andhra food, we decided to stick to the speciality. Mutton Pepper Dry (R 125), Masala Papad (Rsu00a035) and Lemon Chicken Dry (Rsu00a0100) were our first choices for starters.

Accompanied by the sweet black grape juice (Rs 38), the Mutton Pepper Dry was fiery and teased our tongues.

Despite, the spicy taste and curry leaves, it stole the show unlike the chicken starter which was batter fried and quite regular in taste.

By this time our tummies were quiet satisfied and we decided to keep our main course light.

The list of rice preparations comprising both vegetarian and non-vegetarian biryanis in Andhra and Hyderabadi style tempted us. Giving in we decided to throw calorie caution to the wind and settled for the all time favourite Hyderabadi Mutton Dum Biryani (Rs 125).

And, thankfully, the biryani did not disappoint us. Served on a plantain leaf on a steel plate, the tender and juicy mutton pieces complimented the spicy, fragrant basmati rice and the fried onions on top added to the taste. The biryani with raita and salaan tasted perfect and so we decided to give any gravy dish a pass.

After all the spice we craved some sweet to cool us down. However, on the dessert front we were a bit disappointed. The menu had only regular ice cream sundaes and was devoid of any Indian options. We decided to let the taste of the meal linger and leave the sweet dishes for the next time.

New Plantain Leaf will remind you of the numerous restaurant chains all over the city that claim to serve authentic South Indian cuisine and is nothing striking. However, if you are looking for cheap and good food at the end of a hard day, the New Plantain Leaf shouldn't be a bad choice.
