An online organic store based in Chennai goes beyond the usual fruits and veggies to offer clients handmade soap, amla candy and even diet biscuits
If you thought organic farming was just a fad for people with too much time on their hands and too much money in their banks, think again. Dhanyam, an online organic food store works with organic farmers in Tamil Nadu (from Kodaikanal). They grow a variety of crops organicallyu00a0-- without using chemical fertilisers or pesticides. Crop rotation, living soil (with ponds and an eco-system of small organisms like earthworms that exist in the soil) and companion planting are the cornerstones on which they build their foundation, with the goal of protecting the environment.
Started by IIM Ahmedabad graduate Madhusoodhanan Kannan in July 2010, Dhanayam offers a variety of organic products that goes beyond vegetables, fruits and spices. Click on the 'Our products' tab and you will see a long list of organic products that includes handmade soap, amla candy and mixed millet diet biscuits.
While perishables such as vegetables, milk and cheese cannot be delivered to towns that are further than a night's journey from Chennai, Dhanyam sells everything else on the product list, including the essential oils and the herbal medicines. The minimum purchase order is Rs 500, plus transportation charges, which do not go beyond Rs 200.
