In recent years, cannabis-infused beauty products have been making waves in the global market, driven by consumer interest and product innovation. The range of cannabis-infused beauty products has expanded to include everything from skincare creams and lotions to hair care and makeup.
As more research emerges on the potential of cannabinoids, particularly CBD, to address various skin concerns, cannabis-infused facials are gaining traction in the
beauty industry. We asked Farheen Shaikh, skin expert and permanent makeup artist at ZAH Salon and Spa to explain what cannabis facials are and answer
some frequently asked questions. We also spoke to Dr Deepak Jakhar, consultant dermatologist at Dermosphere Clinic, and author of Good Skin Bad
Skin, to understand the use and benefits of cannabis-derived beauty products, alongside safety precautions.
Cannabis-derived ingredients in skincare products
The dermatologist finds the use of cannabis-derived ingredients in skincare products to be promising but still in need of further research. Jakhar explains, "Among the various cannabinoids, CBD (cannabidiol) is particularly beneficial for skin health. CBD has been shown to possess potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, effectively reducing redness, and swelling, and protecting the skin from environmental damage. Additionally, CBD can help regulate oil production, making it useful for managing acne-prone skin. Other cannabinoids, such as CBG (cannabigerol) and CBN (cannabinol), also show potential, but CBD is currently the most studied and widely used in skincare due to its versatile benefits and favorable safety profile. However, the skincare industry is still relatively new in incorporating these ingredients, and more clinical studies are needed to confirm their efficacy and safety comprehensively."
When asked what are the potential benefits of using cannabis-derived ingredients in facial treatments, Jakhar responds, "The antioxidant properties of cannabinoids help protect the skin from free radical damage, which can slow down the aging process and maintain a youthful appearance.
The soothing effects of cannabis-derived ingredients also enhance the overall relaxation experience of facial treatments, contributing to both skin health and mental well-being."
What is a cannabis facial?
The cannabis facial is perfect for anyone who has extremely dry, dehydrated or mature skin, according to Shaikh. She shares, "Its anti-inflammatory properties hydrate the skin from within and reduce signs of aging. 97 per cent of the facial kit is made from natural ingredients. The primary ingredient is the original cannabis oil which is extracted from hemp seeds.
This oil is rich in fatty acids like - Omega 3, Omega 6 and Omega 9 that nourish, hydrate and soothe the skin. It's also rich in antioxidants that
help to promote beautiful, and healthy skin."

Shaikh also breaks down the process, "A cannabis facial is no different from any other facial when it comes to the technique. The primary and only
difference remains the products used in the process."
The steps include:
Ultra comfort cleanser
Whiteness clarifying mask
Rice scrub
Ultra comfort toning
Cannabis facial oil
Cannabis emulsion
Cannabis mask

How do cannabis facials differ from traditional facials?
"While most commonly available facials are either chemicals or a mix of organic and chemical ingredients, cannabis facial is 97 per cent natural. This means that it has less or no side effects and gives long-lasting hydration to the skin while repairing it from within," answers Shaikh.
What are the claimed benefits of cannabis facials for the skin?
Shaikh lists a few of the benefits of a cannabis facial below:
Nourish: It helps to restore the skin's natural barrier while deeply nourishing it.
Hydrates: The facial instantly hydrates the skin and has lasting results.
Prevent: It has an antioxidant effect against free radicals.
Soothes: Helps improve the appearance of reddened and irritated skin.
Renews: Encourages skin renewal
Smooths: Reduces roughness of skin, thereby improving its texture. Also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Benefits of cannabis facials versus traditional facial treatments
"Cannabis facials offer unique benefits compared to traditional facial treatments due to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of cannabinoids like CBD. These properties can help soothe irritated skin, reduce redness, and provide a calming effect, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals with sensitive or acne-prone skin. Additionally, the antioxidant properties help combat free radicals, potentially slowing the signs of aging. However, traditional facials often include a wider range of treatments tailored to specific skin concerns, such as deep cleansing, exfoliation, and hydration. Combining elements from both cannabis and
traditional facials might offer the most comprehensive skin benefits," says Jakhar.
Can cannabis facials be combined with other skincare treatments?
It should not be combined with any other treatment, says Shaikh. Jakhar elaborates on concerns about potential interactions between cannabis-derived ingredients and other skincare products, "There are potential concerns about interactions between cannabis-derived ingredients and other skincare products, particularly with active ingredients like retinoids, acids (such as glycolic acid), and vitamin C. Cannabinoids can have soothing and anti-inflammatory effects, which might reduce the irritation caused by these potent actives. However, the lack of extensive research means we don't fully understand all the interactions. Users should introduce cannabis-derived products gradually into their routine and monitor their skin's response. Consulting with a dermatologist can help ensure that combining these ingredients won't lead to adverse effects or reduced efficacy of their skincare regimen."
What precautions should be taken before and after a cannabis facial?
It's best to avoid retinol-based products at least for 3 to 4 days before the facial, suggests Shaikh. She also recommends an aftercare routine, "Avoid using face wash for a minimum of 12 hours post-facial. Don't forget to use a good amount of SPF when stepping out for at least 48 hours. One can continue their skincare routine but its best to use good home-care products based on natural and organic ingredients."
Are there any concerns about the long-term use of cannabis-derived ingredients on the skin?
"While current research suggests that cannabis-derived ingredients like CBD are safe for topical use, there are still concerns regarding their long-term effects. The skincare industry is relatively new to incorporating these ingredients, and long-term studies are limited. Potential concerns include skin sensitivity or allergic reactions with prolonged use, and the possibility of interactions with other active ingredients in skincare products. It's important for users to monitor their skin's response over time and consult with a dermatologist to ensure that the continued use of cannabis-derived ingredients is safe and beneficial for their specific skin type and concerns," concludes Jakhar.
