The suspect in police custody on Wednesday
The Borivali Police in Mumbai have successfully nabbed a worker employed in a gold polish factory who, under a different identity, reportedly stole around half a kilogram of jewelry after being terminated from his job, the police said on Wednesday.
According to the police, the suspect was identified as Shaukat Ali Shaikh, alias "Kunu," who had assumed the name Kun Adiwasi while working in a jewelry polish workshop owned by Hasib Mohammed Siraj Koyal (55). Koyal operates the jewelry polish workshop near Borivali lockup, undertaking contracts for jewelry polishing from various jewelers.
Police sources said, Manish Prabhakar Mankad, the owner of MB Jewelers based in Gorai, sent gold chain jewelry for polishing at Koyal's workshop. However, when Koyal failed to return the jewelry, Manish Prabhakar Mankad filed a complaint with the Borivali police in June.
API Gaytri Bedse registered the case, and PSI Indrajeet Patil and his team, under the supervision of Senior Inspector Ninad Sawant, initiated the investigation. They apprehended Shaukat Ali, 38 from Vardhman District, West Bengal yesterday and brought him to Mumbai. He was produced before the court today, which remanded him in police custody, the police said.

"During the investigation, it was revealed that Koyal's friend, Pradeep Sarkar, introduced Shaikh as his friend from their native village, "Kanu Adiwasi," and recommended him for a job in Koyal's workshop. However, Koyal later realized that Kanu lacked experience and, following Sarkar's advice, terminated him from the job," an official said.
On the day of the incident, while Koyal was offering Namaz inside the workshop, Kanu took advantage of the situation and escaped with the stolen jewelry, according to an officer.
Upon obtaining information from Koyal, the police tracked down the absconding accused and arrested him. During the interrogation, Kanu revealed that he had sold the stolen jewelry somewhere in Gujarat, prompting ongoing investigations into that aspect, he added.
