Thane: A police constable attached to the Mumbai police's traffic department committed suicide by setting himself afire today at Kopri, police said.
The incident occurred at around 7 AM, when Anant Sawant, around 58, came out of the house, drew petrol from his bike and doused himself in it before setting himself on fire, they said, adding he sustained 98 per cent burn injuries.
According to police, Sawant was not keeping well since last six months and was getting treated at a private hospital.
Sources said the traffic department refused to accept the certificate issued by the private hospital and instead asked for the examination and report by the government hospital following which he was depressed and ended his life. He is survived by wife and two daughters.
