Out of five rumble strips installed along a 200-metre stretch, four were removed within three days of the report being published. The Kanjurmarg Traffic Division had previously advised the BMC that the area was not accident-prone and suggested action against the strips. Despite this recommendation, the BMC failed to take action until Mid-Day highlighted the issue. Residents expressed relief as the noise pollution caused by vehicles passing over the strips had finally ceased.
Ravi Naik, a resident, revealed that BJP MLA Mihir Kotecha had previously urged the BMC to address the complaints. Instead of removing the strips, officials merely filled the gaps between them, which failed to resolve the issue. The vibrations continued to rattle windows at night, further disrupting the residents’ sleep. Even after the ineffective patchwork, the BMC continued to neglect additional complaints from residents. Residents questioned whether the municipal corporation was waiting for a media report before taking action. Now that the rumble strips have been removed, residents of Mulund East are finally able to enjoy peaceful nights. The incident highlights the power of media in pushing authorities to address public grievances that had long been overlooked.
