AICTE okays new institutes against state govt wishes

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved the proposal for setting up 17 engineering and four management institutes in the state for the current academic year (2012-13). The approval was given despite state government's appeal to the AICTE requesting the council to refrain from doing so.


The state had informed AICTE about the vacant 13,000 seats in engineering and management institutes in the state. Education department sources said with the new institutes, the number of vacant seats will go up by 20,000. The new institutes will be set up in major cities, including Mumbai, Pune, Nasik and Aurangabad, among others.u00a0

According to education experts and officials from education department, the reason for the large number of vacancies in the engineering and the management institutes has been attributed to the quality of education, and to distance as students hesitate to enroll in colleges which are far from their residences.
