Urban urge
The Delhi Ibsen festival 2009 highlights the work of a younger generation of urbanised Indian theatre directors, selected for their modern, new and path-breaking approaches to theatre. The International productions emphasise inter-cultural challenges in presenting Ibsen's radical ideas in diverse societies. "For us, it was very important that Ibsen's work connected to the Indian audience. The legend has been done time and again, what makes it different this time is that all his works are subtly stark, as observed closely in the participant directors' own versions," says Dr Nissar Allana, festival director. Wiki wisdom on Ibsen
Henrik Ibsen was a major 19th century Norwegian playwright, theatre director, and poet. He is often referred to as the godfather of modern drama and is one of the founders of Modernism in theatre. His plays were considered scandalous to many of his era, when Victorian values of family life and propriety largely held sway in Europe. Ibsen's work examined the realities that lay behind many facades, possessing a revelatory nature that was disquieting to many contemporaries. It utilised a critical eye and free inquiry into the conditions of life and issues of morality. Ibsen is often ranked as one of the truly great playwrights in the European tradition, alongside Shakespeare.
