Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa responded to the widespread public opposition to the idea of a National Military Memorial in the Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain Park by declaring in the Legislative Council yesterday that the memorial would be shifted elsewhere. However, no one knows who will undo the damage done to the park to make place for the memorial.

The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) that was working on the memorial has a new commissioner in Bharat Lal Meena, who replaced Siddiah yesterday. Siddiah is now the commissioner of the BBMP.

Rajeev Chandrashekar said it was the government that had thought of building the memorial and then decided to move it elsewhere.

"It is dangerous," explained Dr Sudhir Pai, general secretary of Krishna Apartment Owners Association that fought a legal battle to stop the memorial from being built. "There is a big 20-ft trench on the site. If it is not filled up at the earliest, it may take some lives."

Pai says he is particularly concerned about school children visiting the planetarium. "The monsoons are on. We could be looking at another Abhishek case." Ten-year-old Abhishek was washed away, last year, when torrential rains lashed the city.

While Rajeev Chandrashekar, the chairman of the National Military Memorial Committee and a Rajya Sabha member, did not respond to MiD DAY queries, Bharat Lal Meena, the BDA commissioner, said, "I have just assumed office. I will do what should be done after consulting other officials."

Chandrashekar, did however say he had no comments to offer on the CM's statement. "It was
Mr Yeddyurappa's government that had decided to build the memorial in honour of martyred soldiers of Karnataka and it is his decision to move it elsewhere."
