Cops flooded with letters blaming builder, agent

Evidence indicates 'clear case of suicide' and Dadar police to close case soon, but have been getting anonymous letters which blame builder and travel agent for his extreme step

While the Dadar police believe business tycoon Lalit Sheth's death is a clear case of suicide and are close to closing the case, they have been receiving anonymous letters that blame someone or the other for his demise.

The police have not found any additional evidence to initiate further investigation into the case, and neither have Sheth's family members found anything suspicious to warrant further action.

Sheth jumped off the Worli end of Bandra-Worli Sea Link on August 1 and the police even recovered a suicide note that said, "Ending my life as failed to fulfil my commitments for which I am solely and alone responsible."

Blame game
"We received an anonymous letter in the end of August that blames a South Mumbai based builder for pushing Sheth to take the drastic step. The letter also said that Sheth owed the builder Rs 2 crore and the builder was forcing him to pay up, after which he committed suicide," said a police officer from Dadar police station.

The police received a second letter and this time the blame was being levelled at a particular travel agent whom Sheth allegedly owed money. Thereafter, letters kept pouring in, but all were anonymous.

"We did not take the anonymous letters lightly and discussed the issue with Sheth's family members, but they said they were not aware about any such debts. But then again, the person sending the letters is also lying and maybe wants to take personal rivals to task by giving their names to us," said a police officer.

The family did not have any complaints against anyone and Sheth's son Akash confirmed the handwriting on the suicide note as his father's. Going by all the evidence at hand, the police have decided to close the case.

The police have again recorded the statement of Sheth's driver Ajit Jha and have found nothing suspicious to take the case further.u00a0
