Eight feared dead as two MI-17 choppers of IAF collide mid-air

At least eight Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel were killed Thursday when two helicopters collided mid-air near Jamnagar in Gujarat, an air force spokesperson said


The collision at the Sarmat ranges near Jamnagar, about 275 km from Ahmedabad, took place while two Russian-origin Mi-17 cargo choppers of the air force were on a training mission shortly after taking off from the Jamnagar airbase.

The villagers, who witnessed the accident, said the two choppers collided soon after take off and crashed near the village, 15 kms from Jamnagar city.u00a0

A court of inquiry was ordered by the IAF to go into the causes for the accident, IAF spokesperson Wing Commander Gerard Galway said in New Delhi.u00a0

Indian Air Force officers, police officials and Jamnagar municipal corporation fire brigade have reached the spot and are assessing the situation. An IAF spokesperson in New Delhi said that a court of inquiry has been ordered to determine the reasons behind the crash.
