In 2022, the Indian automobile industry witnessed a host of new car launches and some big unveils. And, the country's automobile industry is expected to greet the year 2023 on a high note. Even India's top auto show, the Auto Expo, will return after three years in Noida.

It is no secret that the traditionally dominant mass-market models are no longer the key demanded vehicles and a closer look at the top models sold in the country, reveals that there is a shift toward SUV segments and premium models.

The year 2023 will be significant for the Indian automobile industry, with a range of cars and SUVs lined up to either be launched or at least be unveiled.

Here's a list of the top upcoming cars in India.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny five-door

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door will be making its global debut at the 2023 Delhi Auto Expo. The three-door one has been on sale since 2018 and is quite popular around the world for its compact and old-school boxy SUV looks. Maruti is expected to make use of the 1.5-litre K-Series engine and debut Suzuki's Allgrip Pro 4WD system for the Indian market.

Nissan X-Trail 2023

Nissan's New Year surprise for India will be the X-Trail SUV that's been confirmed for a 2023 launch. According to reports, Nissan will offer the X-Trail with either a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol with mild-hybrid technology or a 1.5-litre e-Power engine with a range extender hybrid technology. It will also get ADAS, connected car technology and be the first vehicle among its rivals to offer both two-row and three-row seating options.

Hyundai Ioniq 5

Hyundai has showcased the Ioniq 5 electric crossover in India. The South Korean carmaker has also opened bookings on December 21 for its new flagship model for Rs 1 lakh. Hyundai Motor India said it will introduce its global dedicated battery electric vehicle platform in the country with its upcoming model Ioniq 5, slated to debut in the Auto Expo in January next year. The Ioniq 5 will be the company's first model in the country based on the electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Cross

Maruti Suzuki will launch a new coupe-style cross-hatch based on the Baleno being the latest entrant. According to reports, this new model can be called Baleno Cross. It is most likely at the Auto Expo 2023 in New Delhi, ahead of a market launch in February 2023. The new Baleno Cross is expected to come with a 1-litre Boosterjet engine and it will be retailed out of the Nexa outlets.

Mahindra XUV400

Homegrown auto major Mahindra & Mahindra has said it will drive its first electric sports utility vehicle -- XUV 400 -- in early 2023. The company globally unveiled the five-seater model which comes with a driving range of 456 km (ARAI certified) on a single charge and can attain 0-100 km per hour acceleration in 8.3 seconds. Speaking at an event, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) Executive Director (Auto and Farm sectors) Rajesh Jejurikar had said that the bookings will commence from the first week of January 2023 at both dealerships and online.
