Ex-French president Jacques Chirac was rushed to hospital after being mauled by his depressed dog.

Ex-French president Jacques Chirac was rushed to hospital after being mauled by his "depressed" dog.


The 76-year-old Chirac was savaged by his white Maltese terrier Sumo. It is said to suffer from frenzied fits and is being treated with anti-depressants.

Chirac's wife Bernadette said Sumo had become increasingly violent over the years and was prone to "vicious, unprovoked attacks".

Said Bernadette, "The dog went for him for no apparent reason. We were aware the animal was unpredictable and is being treated for depression. My husband was bitten quite badly but he will make a full recovery."

She didn't reveal where Chiracu00a0regarded as one of France's most popular politiciansu00a0was bitten.

Chirac, who ruled France for 12 years until 2007, was treated at a Paris hospital before being sent home.
Sumo was a gift from their grandson Martin.
