Seek and navigate love in pre- and post-partitioned India with Apoorva Khare’s debut book published by Beeja House

Recently published novel, “Beneath the Gulmohar Tree”, invites readers to step into the vividly painted landscapes of a bygone India while simultaneously exploring the contemporary world. This intricately woven narrative takes readers on an extraordinary journey, seamlessly spanning two distinct eras: pre-partitioned India in 1944 and the present age. It delves into the lives of two remarkable women, a grandmother and her granddaughter, connecting their love stories through a series of letters and diaries. With each letter, the readers will have a glimpse of struggles faced, battles won and battles lost. The journey through the letters and diary is not just for the protagonists, Kirat and Meher, but also for the readers as they go down the ages to witness things come alive in the form of words.

Q1: Using letters and a diary to unfold the narrative is quite a different way of writing a book. What motivated you to use this narrative device?

A: I hold a special place in my heart for hand-written letters. For me, they are the ultimate way to express your emotions. And therefore, I have tried to weave a story with them. The diary and letters in the book serve as a tangible link to the past, allowing the characters to speak directly to the readers. It also adds a layer of mystery and intimacy, making the journey of Meher and Kirat, the protagonists, and the readers, one of discovery.

Q2: Your book is set in the backdrop of the Partition. How did you approach the historical aspects while crafting the narrative?

A: Research played a crucial role in bringing authenticity to the historical aspects of the story. I delved into accounts of the Partition, read novels and stories, and studied historical documents to capture the essence of that tumultuous period. The challenge was to seamlessly weave the historical context into the fabric of the characters' lives, making it an integral part of their journey, without overshadowing the theme of the novel.

Q3: As an editor and storyteller, how has your professional background influenced your writing?

A: Working in the publishing industry has given me a deep understanding of storytelling techniques and the importance of a well-crafted narrative. It has honed my skills in creating engaging and compelling stories. As an editor, I've learned to appreciate the nuances of language, which I believe reflects in the prose of my book.

Q4: As a writer, did you ever face a “Writer’s Block”?

A: Oh, multiple times! Honestly, I have lost count. Writer’s block truly squashes your writing spirit and throws you into a dilemma about whether or not you’re a good writer. But you should not let that feeling deter you. You need to find a way that will help you out of a situation. Be it using a writing prompt, diverting your attention to something else, or leaving your work for a day or two completely, it is up to you. For me, fixing a deadline works. I believe I work best under pressure.

Q5: What message are you trying to give with “Beneath the Gulmohar Tree”?

A: …that love gives you the courage you think you never have. It has the power to make you walk leaps and bounds for your love, forgive, and accept your love in every way possible. And with love I mean be it your parents, grandparents, friends, or all those people who share a part of your heart.  With my book, I believe you’ll walk through different shades of love, loss, belonging, past and present.

Q6: Any advice for your fellow writing authors?

A: Just write your heart out. Don’t think about what anybody else will say. People will talk, whatsoever. But it is your dream, and you should write on your own. Don’t let anybody tell you otherwise.

Q7. Can you share any details about your future writing projects?

A: Yes, I am. Can not share the details as it is in a very early stage. But I will surely come back with my second book pretty soon.

Q8: Now, in one sentence can you describe the book to someone who has not yet read it but should read it?

A: If you want to read a story that would make your heart smile and eyes moist, “Beneath the Gulmohar Tree” is the book for you. Get to know your shared past with Kirat and Mehar and fall in love with them as they walk through the journey of life.
