Adrian has edited thirteen feature films and co-wrote four episodes of the Netflix series 'Dive Club' (2021), which was nominated for Logie and AACTA Awards.

Netflix’s Love Is in the Air

Appearing on  Ajay Tambe’s Podcast, Australian director Adrian J. Powers pulled back the curtain on his latest feature, Love Is In The Air, a Netflix-backed romantic comedy produced by The Steve Jaggi Company. Starring chart-topping singer-songwriter and actress Delta Goodrem, the film draws from Australia’s storied aviation history and the tight-knit communities that rely on small airplanes to connect with the outside world.

“I’ve been obsessed with films all my life,” Powers shared on the podcast. “It never occurred to me I could actually work in the industry until I turned twenty. Once the idea was planted, I never looked back.”

The Inspiration: Aviation and Remote Communities

During his conversation with host Ajay Tambe, Powers credited producer Steve Jaggi’s love of aviation for sparking the idea. Australia’s unique geography demands networks of planes to serve remote towns-an element woven into the film’s core.

“Steve was captivated by how these planes literally keep communities alive. We wanted to capture that sense of connection on screen,” Powers said.

Crafting a Role for Delta Goodrem

Powers revealed that Delta Goodrem was the team’s top choice from the very start. Though famed for her music, the star had past acting experience, making her a natural fit for the character, Dana.

“We wrote the script with Delta in mind,” Powers told Tambe. “It was a gamble, but from our first meeting, she was totally on board-such a warm, positive presence.”

A Race Against Time to Land the Lead

Recounting a high-pressure anecdote, Powers described rushing from an airport to make a Zoom call with Goodrem and her management. Despite flight delays, the meeting was a success:

“I logged on with maybe ten minutes to spare,” Powers laughed. “Her entire team was there, but from the start, Delta was all smiles. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner on this project.”

Proudly Australian, Globally Accessible

Though Love Is In The Air is positioned for Netflix’s worldwide audience, Powers emphasized its Australian roots on the Ajay Tambe’s Podcast. The film utilized local cast, crew, and resources, including support from government agencies like Screen Australia and Screen Queensland.

“It’s one of the great privileges we have,” he said. “We get to share authentically Australian stories-like this aviation adventure-with viewers around the world.”
