Pakistani actor Fawad Khan has reacted to the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that claimed 28 innocent lives. Late on Wednesday night, a day after the incident, Khan took to his Instagram stories to condemn the attack and express sadness over the lives lost." Fawad's statement comes amid backlash over his upcoming film Abir Gulaal with co-star Vaani Kapoor. The film was set to mark his return to Bollywood after nine years. He was last seen in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in India, after which Pakistani artists were banned from working here. Boycott Abir Gulaal protests intensify Calls to boycott the release of Abir Gulaal in India have intensified following the Pahalgam attack. Amid escalating tensions, Ashoke Pandit, President of the Indian Film & Television Directors' Association, has called for a boycott of those who collaborate with Pakistani artists. Meanwhile, the President of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has also taken a firm stance against the release of Abir Gulaal. “This incident is an act of war against the nation. This isn’t the first time… these attacks have been ongoing for 30 years. We, as a federation, have requested with folded hands not to work with Pakistanis. They come up with bulls*** reasons like artist or community, but ultimately, the nation must come first. People think, ‘agar mere ghar ka aadmi nahi mara toh f**k it, I don’t care,’ but if this film’s heroine or the makers’ family members had been shot by the terrorists, they wouldn’t have worked with Fawad,” said Pandit, adding, “We will issue an order that anyone who works with Pakistani artists will be boycotted by the industry.” About the Pahalgam terror attack A terror attack occurred at the Pahalgam hill station in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday. Over 20 tourists, including Indian nationals and two foreigners, were shot dead by terrorists in the valley. According to reports, two to three terrorists wearing army fatigues opened fire on horse-riding tourists in the Baisaran area around 2:30 p.m. Baisaran is a small meadow located 3 to 4 kilometers from the Pahalgam market, typically accessed by tourists via horseback due to the absence of motorable roads. Five terrorists — including three Pakistani nationals and two residents of Jammu and Kashmir — have been identified as the perpetrators of the horrific attack, which is being described as the worst terror strike to hit the region in nearly two decades. Investigative agencies named the three Pakistani nationals as Asif Fauji (code name Moosa), Suleman Shah (code name Yunus), and Abu Talha (code name Asif). Two other Valley-based operatives — Adil Guri, a local from Bijbehara in Anantnag who went to Pakistan in 2018, and Ahsan, a resident of Pulwama who also went to Pakistan in 2018 — were also identified, according to sources.

Masaba Gupta: I had bad cramps because of the tight corset
A week before her January 2023 wedding, fashion designer and actor Masaba Gupta got a call. It wasn’t the expected congratulatory call; instead, it was casting director Panchami Ghavri requesting her to front a dance number in Kesari Chapter 2. “I thought it was a bizarre request to come my way,” recalls Gupta, whose cabaret song, Khumaari, is a surprise element in the Akshay Kumar-led period drama. Not many know that in her teenage years, Gupta trained at Shiamak Davar’s institute, and has always been enthusiastic about dancing. Tell her it shows in the song, and she attributes it to director Karan Singh Tyagi’s vision. “He had this thought [of casting me]. It was earlier meant to be a burlesque number, and then, it became a cabaret song. The fact that I knew I could do justice to it made me say yes. I’ve been a dancer all my life, and always wanted to do something like this. My gut feeling was that I should do it because it was a Dharma film, set in the right backdrop, and it could be something that I could lend myself to,” she says. Before the shoot, Gupta rehearsed for two-three days with choreographer Vijay Ganguly. She even had a reference in her head. “I was referencing Catherine Zeta-Jones from her performance in [Chicago]. In my head, it was a toned-down performance of Zeta-Jones’ in All that jazz,” she smiles, adding that while the dance was a breeze, she faced an unexpected hurdle. “I had bad cramps because of the tight corset, and was curled up in the vanity van between takes. But it sorted itself out thankfully, and everyone was patient with me.”

Pratik Gandh: ‘Blatant discrimination in our society is concerning’
Two weeks ago, Pratik Gandhi was at the same point where he is today, on the cusp of a movie’s release. Unfortunately, Phule—a biopic on Mahatma Jyotirao Phule—didn’t hit the theatres then as some sections of the Brahmin community opposed the film, believing it showed them in poor light. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) demanded certain changes, too. Today, as the Ananth Mahadevan-directed venture lines up for an April 25 release, the leading man says the resistance didn’t surprise him. “Given the sensitive nature of the subject and the current climate, I wasn’t entirely surprised by the possibility of some form of reaction,” he smiles sardonically, before adding, “When you’re dealing with historical figures and social issues that are still relevant and sometimes contentious, different perspectives are bound to arise. Our intention was never to create unnecessary controversy, but to tell an honest and factual story. We approached it with a sense of responsibility.” Pratik Gandhi with Patralekhaa in the film Phule, also starring Patralekhaa, chronicles how the 19th century social reformer and his wife Savitribai Phule fought against the rampant casteism and championed women’s education. Gandhi admits that the deferral of its April 11 release disappointed him. “We were aiming to coincide it with Jyotirao Phule’s 197th birth anniversary. That was a way to honour his legacy. So, the postponement, due to a combination of certification changes and the initial reactions, was a setback. However, my primary concern was always that the film’s message should reach people effectively.” Even as two centuries separate the social reformer and us, the actor believes that his ideas depicted in the film have “immense” relevance today. “While the film is set in the 19th century, the core issues it addresses—caste discrimination, the fight for equal rights, and the importance of education—are still very much alive in our society. Phule’s emphasis on reason, questioning social norms, and striving for a more egalitarian society continues to be relevant in a world divided by prejudice and misinformation,” he states. As we continue to fight different forms of social ills, is there a social reform he’d like to see today? “The eradication of all forms of discrimination, whether based on caste, religion, gender, or any other social marker,” Gandhi says, in a heartbeat. “We’ve made progress, but the subtle and sometimes blatant ways in which discrimination still operates in our society is concerning. I believe in fostering an equitable society, where every individual is treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background.” April 11The date when Phule was to initially hit the theatres Changes in the tale The makers complied with the CBFC’s changes and removed the terms, Mahar, Mang and Peshwai. After Border 2, Varun Dhawan to reunite with dad David Dhawan for romantic film
