Anurag Basu reacts to 'purity' remark following Triptii's exit from Aashiqui 3

Earlier this week, mid day reported that Triptii Dimri was out of the Kartik Aaryan-starrer Aashiqui 3, which was supposed to go on floors this year with Anurag Basu helming the project. The news came after Dimri had done look tests for the film and even performed for the mahurat shot. Since then, there have been rumours that the actor was dropped from the film as the makers felt she had become “too exposed” to be cast in the romantic film, which they apparently believed “demanded purity in demeanour from the female lead”. mid day reached out to Basu, who is set to begin another romantic film with Aaryan soon, for a comment on the rumour. The director set the record straight. He said, “That’s not true,” and added, “Triptii knows it too.” Anurag Basu The third instalment of Aashiqui, which is now indefinitely postponed, was produced by Bhushan Kumar. The T-Series head honcho is now producing the yet-untitled collaboration between Aaryan and Basu. The hunt for its female lead is underway, and it’s set to go on floors later this month or early February.  A source noted, “The rumours around Dimri’s departure also suggested that the makers saw no buzz around the actor post her biggest success, Animal [2023].” The makers apparently took into account the underwhelming box office result of her “so called” solo releases. Ironically, Dimri’s most recent success was T-Series’ Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, where she was the lead opposite Aaryan. Sources close to the development inform that Dimri has moved on to Vishal Bhardwaj’s Arjun Ustara, which was also supposed to star Aaryan. However, it is now being headlined by Shahid Kapoor. “The buzz around Triptii has been at an all time high since Animal’s success. That’s also what made her the sought after choice for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. After the romantic comedy Bad News [2024] and Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video [2024], she was kicked about headlining an intense love story by Anurag. With her debut film, Laila Majnu [2018], becoming a success upon its re-release last year, there has been a demand to see her in a romance,” shared a source. Dimri was looking forward to the full fledged schedule of Aashiqui 3, before gearing up for the release of her Dharma Productions’ film, Dhadak 2, directed by Shazia Iqbal.

Ranveer Singh and Wamiqa Gabbi

Wamiqa Gabbi to play female lead opposite Ranveer Singh in Basil Joseph’s next?

It’s raining offers for Wamiqa Gabbi, who recently appeared in Baby John alongside Varun Dhawan. She has joined Adivi Sesh and Emraan Hashmi in the thriller G2 and will feature in Akshay Kumar’s Bhoot Bangla. The actor is also the frontrunner to join opposite Ranveer Singh in an upcoming superhero film directed by Basil Joseph, known for Minnal Murali. The project is rumoured to be a Bollywood adaptation of the iconic Indian superhero Shaktimaan.  Sources reveal, “She has been garnering attention for her versatile performances in Hindi and regional cinema and is also rumoured to be signing a Telugu project opposite Nani. Currently, it’s all dialogue, but if the film materialises, the pairing of Wamiqa and Ranveer in Basil’s film would add fresh energy to the project that has been in the works for five years now.” Basil Joseph While no official announcement has been made, insiders suggest the film is still in its early stages, with pre-production underway. Joseph, despite his limited proficiency in Hindi, has been conducting readings and meetings with Singh in Mumbai. “Once the script is completed and final dates are worked out, this will be finalised. [Until then], Ranveer is busy wrapping up Aditya Dhar’s spy film. He will shift focus on [the superhero film] only after March,” adds the source.

Karan Johar flaunts T-shirt with 'nepo baby' print; Prabhas to get married?

Is a wedding on the cards?   Rumours are rife that South star Prabhas is planning to get hitched soon. The buzz began when trade analyst Manobala Vijayabalan shared a cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter). The post read “Prabhas,” accompanied by a wedding and a bride emoji. The post sent fans into a frenzy, with many speculating whether the Baahubali superstar is tying the knot. While some speculated that the bride is actor Anushka Shetty, there has been no confirmation. Last year, before the release of Kalki 2898 AD, similar rumours floated in the media. At the time, Prabhas clarified that he was not planning to marry anytime soon, as he did not wish to disappoint his female fans. So, what changed in a year? Curious minds want to know. On the work front, Prabhas’ highly anticipated film, The Raja Saab, has been postponed. Owning his tag   Karan Johar surely knows how to grab attention, even for a simple outing. The filmmaker was spotted at a dinner meet with Shah Rukh Khan’s wife, producer Gauri Khan, wearing a T-shirt that read, “Nepo Baby”. The duo was later joined by Malaika Arora. Karan has long been trolled for giving star kids their big Bollywood breaks and promoting nepotism. After defending himself for years, he is now wearing the tag like he owns it. What a way to respond to the naysayers!   Celebrating small wins Boman Irani is on a high as his directorial debut, The Mehta Boys, opens the Indian Film Festival in Berlin. The film, starring Avinash Tiwary, Boman, Shreya Chaudhary, and Puja Sarup, tells a heart-touching story about a father-son bond and the nuances of their strained relationship as they find themselves compelled to spend 48 hours together. Speaking about the film, Avinash said, “It’s a matter of great honour to have our film play out to a mix of Indian and international audiences in Germany.” The Mehta Boys also received accolades at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival, where it won an award for its gripping story and outstanding performances. Slated to release on Prime Video soon, the film is written by Academy Award winner Alex Dinelaris Jr of Birdman and The Revenant fame. “At 35, I became a photographer; at 44, I became an actor; and at 65, I became a director and a writer,” Boman said on the red carpet at the festival, which will run for three days.  “There is a lot of conflict between fathers and sons. By the way, I just want to make it clear, I have a great relationship with my sons. However, there is always a change from the time a child [grows up]. There is a change in the relationship and a man feels he is not needed anymore. [Although], that’s his way of feeling that he is growing old. And that frustration shows out in The Mehta Boys,” Boman added.

Sameer Wankhede & Shah Rukh Khan's son

Wankhede on bribe allegations in Aryan's drug case: ‘Sometimes you rub...'

Sameer Wankhede, who headed the case involving the detention of Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan in the alleged drug racket, faced several allegations after Aryan got bail. Sameer was accused of taking a bribe from SRK’s manager, Pooja Dadlani. In a recent interview, Sameer reacted to the allegations and stated that he is not scared because he has not done anything wrong. In an interview with Zoom TV, Wankhede was asked about the case. He shared that he didn't get any appreciation or medal for what he did. He also stated that he believes in the country's judicial system and knows that the truth will prevail. ‘I was prepared’- Sameer Wankhede Sameer shared, "You get medals and appreciation, but such things never happened to me. However, I was prepared from my early days. You know, when you try to implement the right thing and uphold the Constitution in your duty, sometimes you rub some so-called mighty people the wrong way. Agencies do their work; they have the right to do so, and having worked in a similar kind of agency, I know that it takes time, but the truth eventually comes out." He further continued and shared, "When questions are being asked, I need to answer them, and I will answer them—I have already done so. We are very proud of our judiciary. When they are there, we feel relaxed and know that the truth will prevail. It may take years because of long litigation cases, but I am not scared because I have not done anything wrong." About Aryan Khan’s alleged drug trafficking case In 2022, Aryan Khan was released and cleared of all charges due to insufficient evidence. The following year, Shah Rukh Khan released the film Jawan, in which his character delivered the dialogue: “Bete ko haath lagane se pehle, baap se baat kar.” This created quite a buzz, as many suspected it was a veiled dig at Wankhede, who had submitted an affidavit in court detailing purported chats with Shah Rukh Khan. Earlier, Sameer had reacted to the baap-beta dialogue in Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan and shared, "I don’t want to take names and make them famous. As far as the leaked chats are concerned, I will repeat myself: I am not allowed to comment on it. Whatever dialogue is seemingly used against me... with the words ‘baap’ and ‘beta,’ they sound extremely cheap and third-rated. We don’t use such words in a cultured society. These are simply roadside dialogues. I don’t expect myself to give importance to such things and react."

Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor

Security consultant reveals challenges faced at Alia and Ranbir Kapoor's wedding

Actors Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor got married in April 20022 at their Bandra apartment. While it may seem like they had a quiet and intimate wedding home in the presence of their near and dear ones, that was not the case. Security consultant Yusuf Ibrahim who managed the wedding called it the toughest they have ever handled.  In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, security consultant Yusuf Ibrahim who has managed several high-profile weddings reveals details of Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor's wedding. He said that over 350 media personnel was stationed outside Ranbir and Alia's home in Bandra where they got married. Apart from that, curious fans were also seen outside the society gates.  Security head calls Alia and Ranbir's wedding challenging He said, “The toughest ever wedding we managed was that of Alia Bhatt. There were at least 350 people from media houses. At least ten people came from each company. Additionally, their fans had assembled outside their home. Same company sent four people from each of their regional channels. People had crowded the entire Pali Hill. Both ways leading to Pali Hill was filled with media and fans. The crowd was so much that we had to attend to guests cars from down the road leading to their building. We had to run behind the cars. It got even more challenging because even the guests at the wedding were celebrities. The chaos was such that even the people residing in the building got annoyed and were immensely troubled”. He revealed that 60 people were working round-the-clock at their wedding. Yusuf added, “We were about 60 people in each shift and our shift was of eight hours each. We worked round the clock. It was crazy because the building has just one gate for both entry and exit, so everybody had to enter through the same gate. We had to escort all the relatives and friends through that crowded road. All of their guests were celebs. Press was crazy on that night. I had kept half of my boys in uniform and rest of them in civil dress so that they can manage it well and keep an eye on everybody without making them conscious. They would update me that media is planning to climb the wall and so, I would instruct them to cover the walls. This is how we managed”.

A still from Fateh

Fateh movie review: Sonu Sood's debut directorial feels a bit of a fatty liver

FatehA: Drama, actionDir: Sonu SoodCast: Sonu Sood, Jacqueliene FernandezRating: 1.5/5 Fateh liver! It takes jigar/liver of another kind to so expensively mount a manic-actioner, wholly centred on yourself, onscreen—having not just written (story, screenplay, dialogues), but directed and produced it as well. That’s Fateh, this film. Even it feels a bit of a fatty liver, if you ask me.  What with a strange fascination for food porn, with close-up shots of samosas, egg-omelette, squishing ketchup on a plate, or tea into a cup, when the villain isn’t eating chocolate, or momos. It’s Sonu ki sweety, for his audience, after all. Sonu, being the action star, who’s thus made his directorial debut. Where did it start from? By which I mean, the thought; not the movie itself.  I suspect the fact that video-game violence is the in-thing. And who can do it better than a brawny, 3BHK with washboard abs, Punjabi munda, aged 51, from Moga, who killed it as the villain Cheddi Singh from Dabangg (2010), after all? Except, nobody’s offering him that lead role. So, he must offer it directly to his audience, instead.  Once that profound thought is in place, everything else will easily follow. In comes Fateh (Sonu). Unsure about his income, though.  Given that he usually parades in designer wear, expensive guns, talking shop in a Dubai yacht… For his current vocation, he’s a supervisor in a dairy farm in Punjab’s Moga, before he takes on Mogambos, obviously.  He used to be a top-level secret service agent; so khufiya/underground once, that he can cause khauf/scare of imaginable levels now. That this much has been figured, of course, you would need to surround Sonu with sufficiently well-known names for this to seem a proper film, rather than simply a vanity project.  Therefore, Jacqueliene Fernandez—whose character, I don’t know does what for a living, except play around on computer screens, tracking hackers.  But she finds Sonu hot, and is too shy to tell. That’s the other Sonu ki sweety;besides the film, as I told you.  The villain ought to be plainly established too. And by that, I mean an equally established actor, i.e. Naseeruddin Shah, who flits in and out, every few minutes, in the same costume, watching the world move on screens, blabbering blah, standing next to his secretary in formal wear with supple cleavage.  That’s the chief villain in a movie, where practically everybody, but for the hero, is a villain, of course. You gotta pick your favourites then.  Mine’s the Chinese bloke Lee. To be sure that he’s indeed Chinese, out to screw Indians, he always holds a bowl of noodles in his hand, chomping on food with his chopsticks.  Desis, like Naseer and actor Vijay Raaz’s character, don’t like chopsticks. The latter finishes the villain off with this oriental piece of metallic cutlery itself.  Which is just one of the many ingenious ways the villains die. The finest being a piece of wood that goes straight through both ends of a forehead.  Since the screenplay—that is, all of the above is in full sight—enough hence, for the hero, to go from hideout to hideout, just killing off all that he can see, amassing a body-count so huge in this orgy of violence, that you forget that all of this started because one girl, in the hero’s pind, went missing.  And that’s because she and others in the village had got conned in a loan-app scam! Indeed, cyber crime is the new uncontainable underworld.  But with so many deaths, without any consequences, must wonder, what’s the big deal that there are some dudes losing a lotta money!  At some point, the interval, to be precise, a warning scrolls on the screen suggesting, “Brace yourself, you’ll need the break,” or some such, in chaste English.  This is the part by when, I suspect, the filmmakers had watched Animal (2023), so the corridor sequence with masked men getting walloped, one by one, follows. I know they’ve already seen Jurassic Park (1993), so the plastic cup shaking with water inside has already happened! Fateh is basically the hero, as director, shooting himself, randomly shoot down hundreds on the go.  What do I look at, since we’ve seen it all, anyway? Well, listen to the dialogues for personal pop-philosophy, then: “Bahut kam log jaante hai ko woh kam jaante hain (Few know that they know little); “Insaan samajhta hai apni samajh ke hisaab se (Man is limited by his own understanding).” Hmmm… Like; much.  Frankly, I like Sonu Sood more. Not just as an actor—and he’s bloody convincing as the brooding brawn, alright. But more so for what he did during the pandemic—ferrying, if I’m not mistaken, 7.5 lakh migrants back to their homes.  Fateh is not his forte. It’s tragic for a film industry that more competent writers/directors/producers couldn’t see sense in platforming the self-made Sonu through a script that does his genuine stardom fair justice.  And that, poor guy, has to do everything on his own. Besides spend on the film like it’s a global langar, even bring down at least one huge international talent for it.  Which is the only thing this film will leave behind—a popular trivia question. Play the track ‘To the moon’. Ask for its significance. It’s composer Hans Zimmer’s Bollywood debut. In Fateh. Waah!

Diljit Dosanjh

Diljit Dosanjh's controversial film Punjab '95 to finally release in February

Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Punjab '95's release was stalled owing to a hurdle at censor clearance stage. The film directed by Honey Trehan is based on the life of Punjab-based activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. The film, produced by RSVP, was submitted to the censor board in December 2022. After multiple cuts and delays later, the film is now scheduled t be released in February. However, the makers have not revealed the medium on which the film will be released.  On Saturday, Diljit Dosanjh took to his Instagram handle to share some stills of himself as Jaswant Singh Khalra from the film. In the stills, he can be seen covered in blood and wearing worn and torn clothes.  "Challenge the darkness," he captioned the post. He took to Instagram stories and mentioned that the film will be released in February.            View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by DILJIT DOSANJH (@diljitdosanjh) Punjab 95's CBFC challenges  In September, mid-day had reported that CBFC chairman Prasoon Joshi, along with the Revising Committee, watched the gritty drama last month and handed out a final round of changes. Sources tell us that the cuts have now sharply increased from 85 to nearly 120. Not just that, one of the pivotal asks is that Khalra’s character be renamed altogether. A well-placed source from the film’s team reveals, “Per the CBFC’s suggestion, the film will now be called Sutlej, denoting the river that unites Punjab. There are a total of almost 120 changes! The most pivotal change is to not call the protagonist Jaswant Singh anymore. Honey and producer Ronnie Screwvala told CBFC that they won’t allow this change in a film that highlights Khalra’s role in investigating the disappearance and killing of Sikh youths during the Punjab insurgency between 1984 and 1994. Their point of argument was that Khalra is seen as a martyr by the Sikh community and removing his name will be disrespectful not just to him and his family, but to the entire community. Not to mention that it then won’t be a biopic anymore. The CBFC also stated that the movie cannot claim to be based on real-life incidents as they felt it would lead to ‘swaying of sentiments’. The movie—also starring Arjun Rampal and Suvinder Vicky—was first screened for the CBFC in 2022. Since then, Screwvala and Trehan have been trying their best to get it cleared. It had led to a court case, with Screwvala appealing against the Censor Board’s then-ask of 22 cuts. “The makers had eventually decided to pursue an out-of-court settlement. In an earlier meeting, the Revising Committee asked them to alter a line in the film, where the protagonist remarks that over 25,000 people have been killed in Punjab. The Revising Committee stated that the number be reduced. But Honey and Ronnie had opposed it, noting that all the facts shown in the film were based on real-life testimonies and the CBI court’s judgment from the ’90s,” added the source.
