Indian duo TheMxxnlight on their fifth collaboration with American rapper Wiz Khalifa

In the big league

Krish and Akash Chandani

Indian duo and twin brothers Krish and Akash Chandani, aka THEMXXNLIGHT, had crafted the composition for Naughty or nice keeping Wiz Khalifa in mind. They created pockets of music in which the rapper could work his charm, way before they approached him for a collaboration. Their excitement at finding themselves in the good books of the rapper is palpable. “Wiz accepted us from day one,” says Krish of their five-time collaborator. “For that to happen to kids of Asian decent, is rare.” The fact that they are “adaptable”, has worked in their favour. “Whether it is a concert, an after-party, or a last minute gig”, they can deliver, they promise.

Having previously toured with Khalifa, a leg of which included a gig in India, the duo has been able to put a finger on the factors that make their pairing with the American rapper promising. “Wiz can adapt between hip-hop, and RnB. You can see the difference in his songs, which can be melodic, or [conventional] rap. We have been able to complement one another’s styles, and he often tells us that we make him want to explore more melodic music,” says Akash.

Krish describes their music as “futuristic, contemporary, and modern RnB”. He traces their evolution from being artistes whose melodies were unique but less-familiar, to those whose work is now methodical. “Our lyrics are calculated, and each song says a story.”
