Makers of Allu Arjun's 'Pushpa 2: The Rule' eye Oscars 2025

Box-office domination is not the only objective of Pushpa 2: The Rule. The Allu Arjun-starrer, which has earned the distinction of becoming the biggest opener in Indian cinema, is now aiming bigger. Sources tell us that the makers of the Sukumar-directed venture are planning a massive marketing campaign in the United States, targeting both commercial success and a potential push for Oscars 2025. We’ve heard that Mythri Movie Makers, which has backed the action drama, is planning to independently submit the film for the 97th Academy Awards, vying for a spot in the Best International Feature Film nominations.     A trade source reveals, “The marketing campaign will be along the lines of RRR [2022], where the makers took the film to the Academy independently and generated significant pre-Oscars buzz. In two weeks, Pushpa 2 will employ an aggressive lobbying strategy in Hollywood by hosting special screenings, press events, and influencer campaigns.” Arjun and the team will apparently head out on a 10-city tour that includes Los Angeles, New York, and Boston. Another source adds, “Academy is not the only goal, they also want to contribute to the growing trend of Indian cinema exploring international markets. It will also ensure that Pushpa 3: The Rampage has a larger global pull.” When mid-day reached out to trade expert Ramesh Bala, he said it was too early to know if the film’s team is campaigning for the Academy Awards that will be held in March. “The litmus test will be the Netflix release eight weeks later. RRR was watched widely because of its story. Pushpa 2 has a long shot [at the Academy], but it’s a shot worth taking. They will show it to critics in LA, but the real challenge will be to capture the interest of the American audience,” he said.

Actor Dileep's Sabarimala visit has resulted in a court case over VIP privileges

Kerala HC questions special privilege given to actor Dileep at Sabarimala

The Kerala High Court on Thursday termed as "very very serious" the "VIP darshan" provided to actor Dileep at the Lord Ayyappa shrine in Sabarimala recently and said that it resulted in pilgrims being "virtually blocked" from getting darshan of the deity for several minutes. A bench of Justices Anil K Narendra and Muralee Krishna S said it was "not a question of two minutes" when the first two rows in front of the 'Sopanam' were "choked" for several minutes to allow the actor to get darshan. "What is the privilege such persons are having?" the court asked and directed the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) and the Chief Police Coordinator to ensure such things do not happen in future. The observations and direction of the bench came after perusing the CCTV footage of the incident which occurred on December 5 and the video was also shown in the open court. "From the CCTV footage, we notice the movement of the pilgrims through the first row in front of the Sopanam was blocked from the southern side by the Devaswom guard on duty at around 10.58 pm. Film actor Dileep entered the first row of the Sopanam from the southern side by 10.58 pm and remained there till 11:05:45 pm. "It is evident from the video, that movement of pilgrims in the first row from the northern side was blocked by another Devaswom guard by 10.51 pm," the court noted. The TDB told the bench that it had already issued a show cause notice to the officers, including the two guards, responsible for regulating the movement of the pilgrims in front of the Sopanam. The Board's response came after the court asked what action was taken in connection with the incident. After considering the arguments, the bench said, "We deem it appropriate to direct the Travancore Devaswom Board and the Chief Police Coordinator to take necessary steps to ensure such privileges for remaining in front of the Sopanam of Sabarimala Sannidhanam for a considerably long time by blocking darshan of pilgrims was not extended to any pilgrim." The court directed the TDB and Chief Police Coordinator to ensure that "such things are not repeated at Sabarimala Sannidhanam" in future. "The further course of action to be taken shall be decided after filing of the reports by the Chief Police Coordinator and the secretary of the Board," the bench said and listed the matter for hearing on Friday. The court on last Friday slammed the police and TDB for providing "VIP darshan" to Dileep at the Lord Ayyappa shrine during the ongoing pilgrimage season, observing that it "hindered" darshan of many devotees who had stood in line for several hours. It had directed that the CCTV footage of the same be submitted in the court. The bench had said that the actor stood in the first row before the Sopanam throughout the 'Harivarasanam' (lullaby to Lord Ayyappa) till the close of the temple for the day. The court took up the issue on its own based on news reports of the "special VIP darshan" given to Dileep at Sabarimala on December 5 during the ongoing annual Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage when there is a massive rush of devotees to the shrine each day from Kerala and its neighbouring states.

'Sabar Bonda' is not only India’s but the only feature film from South Asia competing in Sundance Film Festival’s World Cinema Dramatic Competition this year selected from the thousands of submissions across the world that the festival receives. This tender yet powerful exploration of identity, familial expectations, and unconventional love is a landmark moment for Marathi cinema continuing the impressive rise of a new wave of Indian independent cinema on the global stage. Sabar Bonda explores loss, social norms, and conformity The film follows Anand, a city-dweller grappling with personal loss and familial pressures, as he embarks on a 10-day mourning ritual in his ancestral village. The cast includes Bhushaan Manoj, Suraaj Suman, and Jayshri Jagtap. Nayanthara and Dhanush

Nayanthara speaks up about her open letter to Dhanush

Tamil stars Nayanthara and Dhanush made headlines after the actress published an open letter criticizing the latter for sending her a Rs 10 cr notice for using a BTS clip from their movie 'Naanum Rowdy Dhaan' for the Netflix documentary on Nayanthara's life and love story with Vignesh Shivan. After dropping the open letter, Nayanthara did not speak about it until now. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Nayanthara explained why she wrote the letter. She also said that Dhanush was a close friend and she tried to talk to him about the issue. Not a PR stunt for documentary, clears Nayanthara “Courage only comes from the truth. I only have to be scared when I’m fabricating something. If I’m not doing that, I don’t have to be scared. If I didn’t speak out now, when things had already gone too far, I don’t think anyone would have the courage to stand up for themselves ever again,” Nayanthara said adding, “Why should I be scared of doing something which I feel is right? I should be scared only if I’m doing something wrong. I’m not someone who would want to tarnish someone’s image just for the sake of publicity." "Why I am saying this is because there are a lot of people who have supported us largely but there are also a lot of people who are supposedly his fans and well wishers, which is fine, but for them to say that we did it as a PR stunt for the film? I don’t think that was the intention at all. I mean it never even crossed our minds. The film is not meant to be viewed as a film. It’s a documentary. You like the person, you want to know more about the person, you watched the film. It doesn’t come under the bracket of a hit or a flop," she added.  Nayanthara tried to reach out to Dhanush “The controversy happened because I spoke out and I wanted to speak in public. Because I personally and genuinely tried to reach out to him so that I can have a direct answer (as to) why and what’s the issue," Nayanthara said. She revealed that her husband and director of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, Vignesh Shivan, made several calls to Dhanush’s manager and even she connected with the manager to resolve the issue but couldn’t get through to the actor. She also said that she tried to reach out to him through their common friends but failed to connect with him. “When the trailer released, the BTS footage that was captured on our phones before, the thing that people don’t understand that… There are a lot of people saying that ‘It is his footage, it’s his rights.’ We are not at all talking about the clips from the film. BTS is a part of the contract only now. This was 10 years before, there were people randomly taking pictures and videos on phones. And these were random videos on our phones. So this was the thing we used, which is hardly anything. Even after so much issues that were created by him or his people, I would say, when the trailer came out, anybody who is a little bit sorted, would have let it be," she explained.
