Aditi Sharma and Sandeep Baswana, who have just come up with a new show Apollena on Colors TV, got into a conversation with us at Mid-Day and spoke their hearts out about the new project. In this era of growing love for OTT, is it easy for a TV show to keep the audience hooked for 24 hours to watch the next episode? Aditi and Sandeep think yes, because, according to them, that is the best part of any daily soap. Sandeep, who is a veteran in the TV industry, also talked about why he chose Apollena over an OTT show. Sandeep & Aditi on people accepting daily soap While sharing if they think the audience is still okay waiting a day every time to know what's next, Aditi said, "That's the exciting part, you know. When you know that abhi humne ek episode dekha hai, abhi next kya hoga vo hume kal hi pata chalega. So that is even more exciting because ek baar dekh kar khatam kiya, uske baad vo story wa ho jati hai. Na koi excitement hoti hai aur agle din nayi kahani. Whereas, yahan apko ek wait hota hai next day ka to know agla kya hone wala hai, isne esa kiya, ab ye next kya karegi, so that is more exciting." While Aditi was answering, Sandeep humorously added, "Agar apko binge-watch hi karna hai toh ek hafta mat dekho TV par, jio par dekh lo." Sandeep: ‘TV actors are looked up to’ When asked if TV actors are looked down upon, Sandeep stated, "On the contrary, people from OTT and films come on TV shows to promote their projects. Are they looked down upon? No, they are looked up to. Characters from TV shows become your family members. Sandeep on choosing Apollena over OTT show Agar aaj bhi family baithkar dekhegi toh vo TV hi dekhegi kyunki usme esa kuch nonsensical nahi hoga jo ap apne maa baap ke sath na dekh sake." He further added that he chose Apollena over an OTT show and said, "For me, I had to choose between an OTT show and Apollena. I chose this show because I didn't like the language that was used in that OTT show. I didn't like the kind of scenes they had written. A lot of people are okay with it; I am not because I know my parents are watching, and they will watch everything I am in, and I don’t want to do something they can't watch." Apollena is about a girl with the same name and her dream of becoming India’s first female astronaut, while she fights against societal norms to earn respect for her father.

12 December,2024 08:07 AM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentBollywood star Varun Dhawan, who is gearing up for his upcoming theatrical movie ‘Baby John’, recently graced the streaming sketch comedy show ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’, and his entertaining foot forward on the show. During the episode, Varun pulled show host Kapil Sharma’s leg as he made a reference to the infamous fight between Kapil and his fellow comedian-actor Sunil Grover. The recently released promo of the series shows Sunil telling Varun, “You look like an original Baby John”. Kapil chimed in as he told Sunil, “You're the duplicate. Everyone else is original here”. Varun caught the beat and the pulse of the moment as he said, “I don't understand one thing. Whenever you're in the airport setting, why do you always fight?”. In 2017, Kapil Sharma had a bad fight with Sunil Grover and Chandan Prabhakar while they were on a flight back from Melbourne. Kapil reportedly verbally abused Sunil Grover. As a result, Sunil decided not to return to ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’. Before Kapil Sharma and Sunil Grover's infamous feud, the two had worked together on hit projects like ‘Comedy Nights With Kapil’ and ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’. Elsewhere during the episode, Varun also pulled off a pole dance. Looking at this, director-producer Atlee said, “I've not seen a boy pole dance. This is the first time I'm seeing”. Meanwhile, ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ revolves around Kapil Sharma and his team of comedians, including Sunil Grover, Kiku Sharda, Krushna Abhishek and Rajiv Thakur. The format of the show is largely similar to his earlier shows as it is largely engineered for the mass audience on the streaming medium. The extravagant set of the play is a visual extravaganza, set against the backdrop of an opulent airport terminal. Archana Puran Singh is the permanent guest of the show. The show streams on Netflix. 12 December,2024 07:50 AM IST | Mumbai | ANIOne of the most versatile actors in showbiz, Rajesh Kumar, who rose to fame as Rosesh Sarabhai in the Indian sitcom Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, is now making headlines for his role as Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Liaquat Ali Khan in the web series Freedom At Midnight. He speaks exclusively to Mid-day about taking a break from television, exploring OTT, and more. Rajesh Kumar on taking a break from television After doing television for years, Rajesh Kumar recalls hitting a roadblock in 2017, when he jumped into farming. The reason? His commitment to a longer format. He explains, “In television, date adjustment is difficult for the production house and for you. So if you get small work, also which is much meatier, you know you can. There is a monotony of going every day and performing the same thing for years and years. To break that, if you get a coffee break outside, you do not get an opportunity to do that. You hit that roadblock in terms of becoming a little complacent. The work you do on yourself or the scene, you get a lax attitude.” He continues, “When you are doing OTT or films, the best part about it is that preparation time is more, shooting time is less, and in that less time, you become the most aware because it happens only once. There are times of improvement in television. For example, if I talk about Sarabhai, in the first 4 episodes or 6 episodes, my voice was good, and what happened after 10 episodes was that I had time to grow in it. But in this, you have to be prepared with full armor. It's one opportunity. There is no room for error. That is why this medium is much more enjoyable.” Rajesh Kumar on getting typecast as a comedy actor Playing the former Pakistani PM in Freedom at Midnight is a big leap for Rajesh Kumar, who was boxed into playing roles with a comedic flair. While the actor is indeed trying to break away from his image as the go-to guy to make the audience laugh, he wouldn’t deny a script since he owns this genre like a pro. Rajesh states, “For me, comedy is like classical music. You can sing any song at home in the bathroom, but when it comes to singing a raga-based song, that's when your training truly comes into play. I have this skill, this vidha (genre), where I can perform a classical piece—in the name of comedy. The sad part of our industry is how typecasting works. Once you're seen as a comedian, the makers have to make a choice: Do they see you as a trained actor who can do comedy, or do they simply label you a comedian? Unfortunately, we often get tagged as just that—"He’s a comedian." “What is it about comedians? Their emotion is so solid because they understand rhythm, the meter, and the pauses in dialogue. They know what the audience is listening to, and they know exactly when to stop their pulse because comedy is all about timing. Despite mastering these nuances, it’s disappointing to still be boxed in as a comedian. People don’t realize that if someone can craft a character like Rosesh and make it believable, imagine what else they could do if given the chance to explore different kinds of roles,” the actor concludes.
10 December,2024 10:50 AM IST | Mumbai | Oshin FernandesOne might assume that writing for television becomes monotonous after a while, but Shabia Walia refutes that strongly. The writer has been crafting TV scripts for over 30 years, and is still raring to go. She is currently working on Wagle Ki Duniya and Pushpa Impossible alongside Rajesh Joshi, with dialogues written by Sneha Desai and Tushar Ishwer. As Pushpa Impossible nears the 800-episode mark, Walia reflects on how writers are having their moment in the spotlight and the gender-neutral nature of the industry. Edited excerpts from the interview. Although television is called the writer’s medium, they rarely get their due credit. The industry has understood that if there’s no good writing, there isn’t a good show. So, increasingly, I have felt that the writers’ time has come; the respect and credit due to them are being given along with the money. It takes a lot of years and some successes to finally [reach that space]. Many good producers, platforms and channels have begun to take notice. I believe writers are in a better space than they were a few years ago. Shabia Walia The Writers Guild of America had been on strike for a long time for fair wages and treatment. How are the writers in India treated? The Screen Writers Association [SWA] is doing a very good job. It is also working to get us royalties. We’ve been told that we’ll get royalties for whatever work we’ve done in the past decade, [which is] similar to [the practice] in America. The money will start coming in the next 18 to 24 months. In TV, actors are the face of the story and hence, get that recognition, but people behind the camera are not even introduced. Comment.I can fairly agree to that. A layman may not know me when I walk on the streets. But the other day, my daughter told her class teacher that her mother writes for Pushpa Impossible and Wagle Ki Duniya. The teacher was enamoured by that. The shows are our road to fame if they do well. Credible awards and social media also help. Now, writers have also become camera-friendly, so they do their own publicity. Since the OTT boom, it’s widely believed that TV content is regressive or over-the-top. Do you agree?I haven’t written any of those shows. When I started writing, I was conscious about the kind of shows I would write. Thankfully, the universe has listened to me and never given me a [regressive] show. Having said that, while it is a creative endeavour, it’s also a business. We have so many platforms to watch shows. Once the supply becomes more than the demand, there is a competition to grab eyeballs. When the business becomes about grabbing eyeballs, [the storytelling] becomes louder. I don’t think there’s anything wrong or right with that. It’s just a need of the business to stand out. Have you written things to grab attention?Fortunately, I’ve done a lot of work with Sab and Sony TV, which has always stayed in the real zone. But for instance, we wrote a story about a 42-year-old woman, who wants to study in a school. After she went to school and cleared her 10th standard, that story ended organically. So, it went on to other things. Of course, we’ve never got lizards and cockroaches in the show. In Pushpa, [it was over-the-top] when we showed her bringing down a huge businessman. You may question if that is possible in real life, to an Adani or Ambani. But that is to [placate] the audience. It is to make them believe that sometimes there may be things they cannot do, but a protagonist can. It’s cathartic. Do the daily grind and time crunch affect you?I’ve written for films, OTT and TV, and the grammar for each is different. OTT and films give you time, but I still prefer writing for TV as it is a great medium. It reaches lakhs of people every day; you get feedback every day as ratings are coming on a daily basis. You can always correct [your mistakes] the next day. TV is forgiving and the viewers are loyal to you. Also, because of the volume of episodes, you end up making good money. I have refused a lot of OTT shows because of the amount of time they take to be showcased. If you have discipline and are consistent, it is possible to write for TV. It is much more rewarding in terms of feedback. Viewers remember TV shows. How well do people remember OTT shows? Since you write for both Pushpa Impossible and Wagle Ki Duniya, how do you keep the content different?Wagle... is largely episodic in nature. Another challenge is that in high-drama shows, you want to know what’s going to happen next. With feel-good shows like Wagle, you know that the hero is going to win at the end of the day. Pushpa is linear and easy to write because you just have to continue from where you left off. The audience is also loyal. People watching episodic shows may not come back tomorrow. Is television dominated by female or male writers?I’d say it’s 50-50. I don’t think either gender is ruling the roost.

09 December,2024 04:15 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentThe Weekend Ka Vaar episodes are never devoid of drama and fights. This weekend, Farah Khan replaced Salman Khan to take over host duties. Khan was out of the country for his Da-Bangg tour. Farah Khan did not spare the contestants in the house during the weekend and grilled them for their behaviour and addressed other issues that came up during the week. Nomination task minus elimination The elimination round turned quite dramatic. Farah asked the housemates to cast their votes against the nominated contestants to decide who should be evicted from the game. Chum Daranga and Kashish Kapoor received the highest votes. The former was saved by getting one less vote than Kapoor. However, in a surprising twist, Khan said that this is a no-elimination week and the nomination voting round was a way to give everyone a reality check. Avinash Mehra lashes out at Bigg Boss 18 makers After Farah Khan made an exit, contestant Avinash Mishra vented out his frustration towards the makers for cancelling elimination week again. He accused the makers of cancelling elimination every time someone from Karan Veer Mehra's group was up for eviction. Avinash Mishra remarked, "Bigg Boss, bolna hai toh aap bhi openly bol do na.
