After steering clear of television for four years and exploring cinema and digital entertainment, Vibhav Roy made his comeback to the small screen with Meri Saas Bhoot Hain. He says it “ticked all the right boxes.” “[Post 2015], it was a bit of a roller coaster ride. I did a few films and was part of three web shows. I was looking for something interesting, and this fell in my lap. It had a juicy ring to it,” says the actor, adding that while he was offered several shows in the interim, the Sushmita Mukherjee-starrer was also “worthwhile financially.”

Meri Saas Bhoot Hain is a horror comedy showcasing the relationship between a dead woman and her daughter-in-law. Roy plays Mukherjee’s son, Som in the daily soap and has no qualms about not being the focus in his comeback venture. “The primary conflict is who will Som marry — a girl of his mother or grandmother’s choosing. I believe my character is pivotal [to the story]. Truth be told, I am not chasing parts based on whether I am the focus or not. I have done supporting characters before as well. As long as it is juicy and has an impact, I will yearn to do it,” says Roy, adding that he went through extensive dialect training for his Benaresi act. “I was being particular about the accent, but my director didn’t want me to keep it too hardcore, which would alienate a lot of people in India. We needed to keep it pan-India. It took me some readings and workshops [to get it right].”

While everyone was excited to see Roy return to the small screen, when he told his soon-to-be mother-in-law about taking up the show, her reaction was priceless. “I got engaged just before I signed the show. When I told my [in-laws] how I will be playing myself in Meri Saas Bhoot Hain, my mother-in-law thought I was taking her case. She is a sweetheart and was happy [about the show],” shares Roy.
