Article 370 actor Skand Thakur on jamming to Amit Trivedi’s music in his next series, Khalbali Records, which sees him play a label maker

The business of music

Skand Thakur and Amit Trivedi

After starting his career with theatre, Skand Thakur made his web debut with Feels Like Ishq. The actor, who was recently featured in the Yami Gautam-starrer Article 370, will be seen delving into the ups and downs of the music industry in the JioCinema series, Khalbali Records. Having been a hip-hop DJ in his early 20s, the actor says he had an edge over other contenders when it came to playing the role of a label entrepreneur. “I am highly sensitive to music. It enhances my work as an actor. I am deeply passionate about hip-hop music and the culture,” says the actor.

Khalbali Records revolves around the tussle between independent Indie artistes and big labels. The story sheds light on new artistes striving to make their mark in the music industry. Produced by Colosceum Media, and directed by Devanshu Singh, the series has Amit Trivedi serving as a composer. Thakur shares that, though he hasn’t heard the whole album, Trivedi’s songs “are absolute anthems.” “I cannot wait for everyone to hear and enjoy them as much as we have. He has collaborated with some talented singers to produce these beautiful tracks, which will be released alongside the show. Amit Trivedi is a genius. Anyone who loves music knows his contributions to the industry—songs like Udta Punjab, Iktara, and London thumakda are just a few examples.”

While Thakur is not allowed to divulge details about his character, he says, “The show revolves around my journey as a label entrepreneur around other labels and underground artistes. I am the central character.” Asked if he found the music industry inclusive today, Thakur explains that talent will eventually find its seekers. “The music industry today offers something for everyone. The internet has made it easier for artistes to reach [a wider] audience without needing traditional gatekeepers. A non-Bollywood song by an underground artiste can go viral in just hours. Films are now sourcing songs and artistes purely based on talent, regardless of their mainstream status. The opportunities for musicians are endless. It has evolved into a space where anyone, regardless of background, can find success and connect with a global audience.”
