Gyan Adab opened a fortnight ago and promises to have the complete package for art and literature lovers of the city. It encompasses a library, an open air performance venue and an art gallery. The GUIDE offers the first peep into the space
Started last month and termed as the first literary centre of the city, Gyan Adab is situated in a quiet lane of Kalyani Nagar. Situated in a bungalow, the centre has dedicated sections for reading, books, an exhibition space for art and for live performances. As the centre promises to provide constant indulgence in the best of literary activities, The GUIDE checked out the centre for its facilities and ambiance.

The idea
According to Farooq Merchant, founder and managing trustee of Gyan Adab, the idea behind the literary centre-cum-library is to provide a set of rarely accessible books to the visitors. He also promises to equip the centre with facilities like literary programmes, a reading space and a platform to interact and share experiences with other literary enthusiasts.
The centre does not charge any registration fees currently and is a walk-in facility for people of all age groups. Visitors need to register themselves at the centre to avail the facilities.
As of now, mostly non-fictional books and study materials dealing with a variety of topics are available. Though we were told that good works of fiction will also be stocked in the near future.
There will be a proper designated area for exhibitions
To preserve languages
Considering that languages are the basis of culture and communication, Gyan Adab intends to enroll a few experts to help them in collecting vernacular literature. The centre already has a few of them lined up in its managing committee such as author and poet Randhir Khare (English literature), author Dnyanada Naik (Marathi literature) and Mumtaz Peerbhoy (Urdu literature).
Set-up
The centre has a peaceful location with least disturbance from the city’s buzzing traffic. A bungalow is modified for this; where it has one room full of books that are arranged according to their subjects whereas the living area contains a relaxing sitting arrangement for reading. Adjacent to the reading room, there is an open space which also provides a cosy spot for readers to sit and read.
Though Gyan Adab started functioning a fortnight ago, the library in the centre so far contains around 2,000 books on topics like history, science, literary material and old magazines.

Other activities
Gyan Adab also features an art gallery which is dedicated to displaying painting collections of renowned and upcoming artists. An open area is specially dedicated to hosting live performances including music and art by new and skilled artists, at least four times a month.
The cultural performances will interestingly have unique combination performances like musical gigs, poetry readings, and live painting sessions. The open air auditorium will also act as the workshop space where budding script writers, photographers, etc will be promoted by giving an opportunity to display their skills.
