Enjoy a performance by Hindi Rock band Jaagar, who aim to entertain you while making you think
The city’s latest Rock outfit is the Hindi band Jaagar and they are all set to perform at Swig. Jaagar or awakening is a collaboration of Indian and Western sounds. The band comprises vocalist and guitarist Anand Altekar (who formed the band and is the man behind Brute Force), drummer and percussionist Agneya Chikte and vocalist and guitarist Karan Pandav. Vinay Kaushal will join them on bass.

Speaking about the gig, Pandav says, “It all began with the vision of a sound; a different, distinctive sound. A sound that would allow us to fill the gap that we saw in the music we had grown up with. That would let us bring aggression, angst, Rock and our Western as well as Indian musical influences all onto one, single stage. A sound that would give us the freedom to say something more, to speak up about things that deserve attention. That would help us tell stories in a language we can all call our own, Hindi.”
Altekar states that earlier they used to perform English Rock but would associate more with Hindi. “We found English Rock more aggressive so we decided to sing Hindi Rock songs. We studied in the Marathi medium and so we had started our work in Marathi. But we later found that Rock music in Marathi does not sound well, so we decided to go in for Hindi. Also, our lyricist Nivedita Agashe is more comfortable in Hindi.”
The vision behind the band is that the sound should make people groove as well as invoke a process of thinking.
“That’s why we have chosen to call it Jaagar. It means: to awaken the power within you through music,” concludes Altekar.
