As Dahi Handi approaches on August 27, Govinda pathaks are geared up to form human pyramids to break pots of curd, butter, etc., as a part of Janmashtami celebrations. However, this tradition can also result in injuries. In an initiative aimed at ensuring safety and timely intervention during Dahi Handi celebrations, AIMS Hospital, Dombivli, has announced an emergency helpline specifically for the injured Govindas.

People can call on the emergency helpline number 7506274959 in case of orthopedic or traumatic brain injuries for immediate medical assistance and ambulance services.

“The Dahi Handi festival sees participation from Govindas of all ages, from children to adults, who dedicate 3-4 months to creating human pyramids to reach a clay pot filled with curd. However, Govindas can face traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) due to unexpected falls and collisions. This can further cause severe issues, including the possibility of falling into a coma, paralysis, seizures, infections, headaches, damage to blood vessels, vertigo, hearing impairment, slurred speech, dizziness, loss of consciousness, difficulty swallowing, and memory issues. Some may need surgical intervention too,” says Dr. Kapil Khandelwal, Neurosurgeon, AIMS Hospital, Dombivli.

“These TBIs can cause lifelong disabilities or even death. Such injuries can impact one's quality of life by making them bed-bound and dependent on family members for daily tasks. Govindas must follow safety guidelines during the festivities and prioritize their well-being by using protective gear like helmets and pads for elbows and knees as well as wristbands. To assist injured Govindas promptly during these celebrations, the emergency helpline is aimed at providing immediate medical assistance to help save lives. Reach out to us without any delay in case of severe injuries sustained by Govindas,” he adds.

Dr. Vishal Lapshia, Orthopedic, Joint Replacement & Arthroplasty Surgeon, AIMS Hospital, Dombivli, informs, “Orthopedic injuries happen during Dahi Handi due to the strenuous activities involved in forming human pyramids and can restrict one's mobility and range of motion. The most common types include fractures, back injuries, hip, neck, shoulder, and knee pain, spasms, ankle sprains, wrist sprains, and shoulder dislocations due to sudden twists or falls.  Repeated movements of climbing and balancing may cause tendinitis in the shoulders or knees over time. One may struggle to walk, sit, or do other basic activities like bathing or combing hair. These injuries can cause a lot of distress for Govindas.”

“Surgical intervention may be required in case of shoulder or knee dislocation due to high-impact falls. Govindas need to warm up, stretch and strength train to improve core stability to prevent orthopedic injuries. Also, don’t forget to wear protective gear while forming pyramids. Govindas should ensure their safety on priority by taking charge of their health,” he concludes.
