What is cataract surgery with eye drop anaesthesia?


Since the 1980’s while performing cataract surgery, injecting an anaesthetic medicine near the eye has been mandatory, earlier. General anaesthesia was used. However, in the last several years the surgery is performed using only eye drops to make the eye numb.

 

Why is the types of anaesthesia significant for the patients?

It tells the patients how advanced his/her cataract surgery is. Surgeons all over the world have been innovating and improving the techniques of cataract surgery until it has reached this level where you do not need an injection to immobilize your eye. The main advancement has been that doctors can dissolve

your cataract by emulsifying it (phacoemulsification) instead of removing it. They then implant a soft foldable lens to replace your cataract us lens.

Why is a pad not applied at the end of surgery per formed with eye-drop anaesthisia?

Since the eye muscles are not immobilized, the recovery from anaesthisia is immediate. So there is no need to apply a pad on your way home. All you need is a pair of sun glasses!

 

What are the types of intra ocular Lenses used in the cataract surgery?

There are various types of intraocular lenses available such as monofocal lenses, bifocal lenses, toric lenses, trifocal lenses, multifocal toric lenses and the latest technology lenses which is the EDOF lenes also called as the extended depth of focus lenses.

 

How do a patient decide which lenses to be used for his operation?

Any cataract patient will undergo an eye sonography commonly known as A-scan procedure. Depending on the result of the procedure and the occupation of the patient and their need we recommend the type of lenses to be used which will be best suitable for him.

 

How is your experience with the latest technology lenses which you have mentioned as EDOF lenses?

Theses lenses are very good and suitable to all kind of patients who wants a clear vision for distance work, near work as well as intermediate work while using the laptop or computer.
