When wearing a bold outfit or colour, it can be easy to commit a faux pas if you do too much. Experts share how to find middle ground

A Fashion risk-taker in her own right, Khushi Kapoor recently made waves on the Internet for her cheery yellow co-ord set, which featured strategic cut-outs. With the corset-style top and lace-detailing on the pants, the fit checks all the Gen Z boxes. The multicoloured handbag she paired with the set further helped to break the monotony, offering visual relief. “This year is all about dressing to feel good,” says fashion stylist Mitali Ambekar, about Kapoor’s outfit. “The dopamine trend, which Khushi demonstrated, involves wearing bright colours such as yellow, orange, pink, red and blue, which are vibrant but loud colours,” she adds. Combining these colours with a risque style can involve veering dangerously close to OTT category, if you aren’t careful. Here’s how to get it right:

>> Pick a focal point: “When wearing a statement colour, focus your attention on one element of the outfit. In Khushi’s case, this element is the outfit itself. Accordingly, she’s kept the look simple with no accessories except a small, contrasting bag, and neutral hair and make-up. If you are wearing separates, pair the statement piece with a neutral  coloured piece that complements the former and doesn’t compete for attention,” Ambekar advises.

>> Choose a common theme: Corset tops, like the one worn by Kapoor, typically come with ribbon accents that you can use to adjust the fit, says image constant Mihika Bhanot. “To create a more cohesive look, she’s used ribbon-like accents in her pants as well, with the lacing. This ties the look together,” she adds. When wearing outfits featuring similar laced-up detailing, she recommends choosing oversized pieces in light, breezy fabrics for a more flattering fit.

>> Emphasise your best assets: When styling a tricky outfit, Ambekar advises choosing pieces whose detailing highlights your collarbones, wrists, waistline or ankles. These, she explains, are the narrowest parts of your body and any piece that draws attention to them will automatically be more flattering.

>> Keep it simple: If you’re uncertain about being able to pull off an entire outfit comprising vibrant colours, Bhanot advises taking it slow with a few pieces. “Start with your accessories — a playful scarf or jewellery in bold tones can be a great first step. From here, graduate to wearing bright single-pieces so you don’t have to stress about coordinating them. Colour-blocking and print-on-print may be the rage but it can be intimidating if you haven’t tried it before,” she signs off.
