Mumbai crime: A half-burnt, dismembered body of a woman discovered inside a gunny bag in Wadala’s BPT colony on October 27, has been identified by her relatives leading to the detention of her son on suspicion of matricide involving property disputes.

The incident came to public attention on October 27 following the discovery of an unidentified body on the BPT premises.

The police suspected that the body was chopped before it was burnt. The woman had an injury on her head and back. "We had suspected that the alleged accused lived in the nearby area as he knew the deserted spots in BPT. However, we had no lead as the body was unidentified,” stated a police official.

The police report indicates that the deceased woman, approximately in her 70s, was employed as a maid in the nearby locality. Her absence from work for three consecutive days prompted concern from her employers, who reached out to her relatives.

Upon notification, the relatives swiftly contacted the Wadala police station, initiating a detailed investigation that led to the revelation of the maid's son allegedly perpetrating her murder over property-related disputes.

The Wadala police has taken the son into custody, and the investigation is on.

On Saturday, the police went into overdrive to establish the identity of the victim. The police distributed hundreds of pamphlets and scanned missing persons reports.

“She had some jewellery on her body. We’ve distributed pamphlets in which we have included her photos and a picture of her jewellery," a police officer had said. The police was hopeful that she will be identified. Investigating officials faced difficulties in the investigation, as there was no CCTV in the area where the body was found.

“Except for the nose ring, ring and earrings, we have no identification marks on the body. The pamphlets include photos of the jewellery. We are also scanning all the missing persons reports to check for clues,” the police had said.
