In what promises to be one of the biggest-ever railway rejig projects in Mumbai, the Kalyan yard remodelling, that has now become crucial for seamless entry-exit into Mumbai from all parts of India as Diva-Thane new lines get ready, is set to begin soon. It involves dismantling of as many as 32 functional lines, construction of four new platforms, elevated decks that would connect Kalyan station to Patri Pul directly and more foot overbridges.

Once complete, the remodelling of Kalyan station will allow seamless entry and exit of trains into Mumbai from north and south India with it playing an ideal host. “Yes. It will be by far the biggest rail realignment project. The Kalyan yard remodelling project will begin this year. It will not only ease commuting and avoid rail jams but also create more passenger amenities. The project will increase the existing platforms and will also create a Kalyan East access for commuters, which is at present almost absent,” a top official from Central Railway said.

Elaborating further, he said the Kalyan remodelling project has been sanctioned under Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) Phase III A and the total project cost is about Rs 81,297.56 lakh. “It is a massive work and will be carried out in two phases. In the first phase, 15 existing rail lines in the Up goods yard will be taken over and dismantled. This phase will also include construction of signalling and other affected buildings, earth and bridge work along with track linking. In the second phase to be taken later 17 functional lines in the Down goods yard will be dismantled, a coaching complex, including three island platforms and one home platform with roof covers, foot overbridge, elevated decks and circulating area will be built,” the official added.

What will be done?

. Six 620-metre long universal passengers platform faces
. 12 lines for Goods operation in the proposed yard with facility of reception and dispatch towards North East and South East direction with simultaneous reception and dispatch facility on each side
. Elevated deck bridge covering the entire platform area (56,700 sqm)
. Improvement of goods shed with modification to its connectivity
. Circulating area between passengers and goods yard
. One road overbridge parallel to Patri Pul Road Overbridge with landing towards proposed station building and circulating area
. Extension of existing Patri Pul Road Overbridge to provide additional opening
. Provision of three new foot overbridges connecting existing platforms to proposed platforms and new service buildings.
