Mumbai witnesses heavy rains, lightning and thunderstorm; three incidents of branch collapse incidents reported

Parts of Mumbai on Thursday night were lashed with heavy rains, thunderstorm and lightning as the India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its Mumbai weather update bulletin, on Thursday issued a yellow alert for the city.


In a nowcast warning, the IMD Mumbai said, "Moderate spells of rain very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Mumbai during next 3-4 hours."



Till 9 pm on Thursday, Mumbai city had received 5.29 mm of rainfall, while the eastern and western suburbs recorded 3.87mm and 0.01mm rainfall, respectively.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started pumping water at Andheri, Malad, Dahisar and Mankhurd subways. The civic body also informed that traffic has not been affected in these areas. The traffic in other parts of the city as well as the train services are also operating smoothly.

The Mithi river level has reached 0.73 metres.

No incidents of house collapses have been reported so far. However, three incidents of tree branch collapses, two in western suburbs and one in eastern suburbs, have taken place, BMC said. Three incidents of short circuits have also been reported. 

For Friday, October 11, IMD has predicted 'partly cloudy sky with possibility of moderate rain or thunderstorm'.

Light rains are also predicted during the weekend, IMD said in its latest weather updates. 

The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 33 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Earlier, on Wednesday, the weather department issued a yellow alert for Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Dhule, Pune, Nashik, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, etc. and predicted light to moderate rainfall in parts of the state. It said that thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places were very likely. It also predicted thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and moderate spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph are very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Nashik, Thane, Sangli, Kolhapur.
