Thane: Kalyan railway yard remodelling enters a crucial phase

Civil works of the Kalyan yard remodelling project will be completed before its target time of December 2023. The phase 1 of the project envisages improving the movement of trains and passengers at Kalyan station on the central railway

The phase 1 of Kalyan railway yard remodelling, one of the city’s biggest rail rejig projects, has entered a crucial phase with key works now nearing completion. Once complete, the project will segregate mail express and suburban trains and allow seamless entry and exit of trains into Mumbai from north and south India through Kalyan station. The yard remodelling will also unlock the full benefits of the new Thane-Diva 5th and 6th line that has been opened to train traffic. The target for completion of phase 1 is December 2023 and December 2025 for phase 2.

The project, which is being implemented at a cost of R812.97 crore includes six new platforms of 620 metres each, an elevated deck covering all platform area, separate reception and dispatch lines for goods operation in the goods yard and two lines for train examination. Other important works include building a circulating area between passengers and goods yard, a new road over-bridge (ROB) parallel to Patri Pul and provision of three new foot over-bridges connecting existing platforms to the proposed platforms and beyond and service buildings.

Providing the status of the bridge, railway officials said 60 percent of the earthwork has been completed, 95 percent of the bridge work of phase 1 is completed and contracts have been assigned for relocation of affected service buildings and quarters and new track-related works. About 90 percent of dismantling of old structures has been completed and works of drain and boundary wall, earthwork in phase 1 for goods line is in progress.

Mid-day had highlighted last year how the project will be one of the biggest boosts for train operations on CR Mumbai. It involves dismantling of as many as 32 functional lines, construction of four new platforms, elevated decks that would connect Kalyan station directly to Patri Pul and more footover bridges.
