Pune rape case: Minister Sarnaik orders security audit of all MSRTC bus stations

In the wake of the Pune rape case, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik on Thursday ordered a security audit of all bus stations and depots of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), PTI reported. A 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped inside a state transport bus parked at the Swargate depot of the city on Tuesday. The accused, a 37-year-old history-sheeter named Dattatray Ramdas Gade, is yet to be arrested. According to PTI, Sarnaik also said a proposal will be sent to the state home department for the appointment of an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer as the undertaking's Chief Security and Vigilance Officer (CSVO), a post that has been vacant since June 2022. He has also directed authorities to deploy female security guards, an MSRTC release said. PTI reported that Sarnaik further asked the police to increase patrolling at depots and bus stations, adding that depot managers must remain at the facility to monitor activities. "Security guards at depots must ensure all buses parked at the facility are locked. Employees must wear proper ID cards to prevent anyone from cheating passengers in any manner," the MSRTC release said. MSRTC has 580 bus stands On Thursday evening, the MSRTC issued an internal circular instructing staff to wear proper uniforms with a nameplate for identification. They have been prohibited from wearing T-shirts with the MSRTC logo, PTI reported. The state transport minister said that all buses and other vehicles parked inside MSRTC depots across Maharashtra will be disposed of before April 15. After reviewing the security situation at MSRTC bus depots and premises in the wake of the Pune rape case, Sarnaik told mediapersons during a press conference at Mantralaya, the state secretariat, that he had given directions to conduct a security audit of MSRTC bus stations and depots. The corporation has around 580 bus stands and 251 bus stations across the state. "An audit of all the bus depots and stations will be conducted, and whatever deficiencies come to light in it, we will try to rectify them. The CSVO post has been vacant. We have requested the chief minister and deputy chief minister to appoint an IPS officer on this post," he said. Panic buttons to be made mandatory in MSRTC buses "The appointment of an IPS officer is the responsibility of the home department. What responsibility the home department is going to give him, the chief minister will decide," he added. Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras will be made mandatory along with Global Positioning System (GPS) and panic buttons in around 15,000 MSRTC buses, including those hired from private contractors, Sarnaik informed. Police have identified the accused in the Pune rape case after examining the CCTV footage inside the depot, and the footage was also handed over to them for further investigation, he said. At present, the MSRTC has around 2,700 security guards appointed through various security boards, and they are reviewing whether this number can be increased along with a 15-20 per cent rise in the number of female security guards, Sarnaik informed. He also urged female passengers to continue using MSRTC buses for their travel without fear, as in the past. "I want to assure them that the government is with them," he said. Following the rape incident, the security guards stationed at the Swargate bus station have been replaced, and action will be taken against the bus driver, controller, or depot manager if they are found guilty, the minister assured. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray speaks at an event marking the Marathi Bhasha Gaurav Diwas, on Thursday, in Mumbai. Pic/X

'Uddhav attacks Shinde, says taking dip in Ganga will not wash away sin'

Taking a dip in the Ganga will not wash away the sin of betraying Maharashtra, said Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday, targeting Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Earlier in the day, Shinde had criticised Thackeray for not attending the Maha Kumbh, claiming that the latter was afraid to call himself a Hindu, news agency PTI reported. "A dip in the Ganga will not wash away the sin of betraying Maharashtra," he stated. Shinde, along with Shiv Sena Members of Legislative Assembly (MLA), had attended the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.  News agency PTI reported that while speaking at a party event marking Marathi Bhasha Gaurav Diwas, Thackeray also launched a veiled attack on former ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and said that "neo-Hindutvawadis" need not teach his party about the importance of Lord Ram. Taking a jibe at Thackeray, Shinde had earlier in the day said the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief was afraid to call himself a Hindu. "Those who skipped the Maha Kumbh should be asked why they missed it. They claim to be Hindus, yet they are scared to call themselves Hindu. (Shiv Sena founder) Bal Thackeray proudly gave the slogan 'Garv se kaho hum Hindu hain (proclaim proudly that we are Hindus),' but now they are afraid to do so, while calling [Bal Thackeray] Hinduhriday Samrat," Shinde told reporters, without naming Thackeray. He was responding to a question regarding why Thackeray and the Gandhi family of the Congress did not attend the mega event, reported PTI. The Maha Kumbh, considered one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimages, began on January 13 and concluded on February 26. The 2025 Maha Kumbh saw a record 66 crore devotees flock to the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. The Deputy CM also assured that the issue related to the post of guardian ministers would be resolved soon. He added that the issues within the Mahayuti were being addressed amicably and with coordination. Following the announcement of Girish Mahajan (BJP) and Aditi Tatkare (Nationalist Congress Party) as the guardian ministers for Nashik and Raigad, respectively, the state government temporarily put the order on hold after Shiv Sena staked its claim for the posts. Deputy CM Eknath Shinde chaired a meeting of the Water Supply and Sanitation Department on Thursday.

Ensure 100 per cent household tap connections in state: Eknath Shinde

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde directed officials to ensure that every village in the state is provided with clean and safe drinking water, along with sustainable sanitation. He stressed the importance of achieving the goal of 100 per cent household tap connections under the ‘Har Ghar Jal’ scheme and also urged that efforts be made to secure special funds from the Central Government for the Marathwada Water Grid Project, an ambitious initiative aimed at ending drought in the Marathwada region. A review meeting of the Water Supply and Sanitation Department was chaired by the Deputy Chief Minister at the Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai on Thursday. Water Supply and Sanitation Minister Gulabrao Patil, Principal Secretary to the Deputy Chief Minister Naveen Sona, Principal Secretary of the Water Supply and Sanitation Department Sanjay Khandare, Member Secretary of Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran Abhishek Krishna, Director of Jal Jeevan Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission Campaign E Ravindran, and Commissioner of Groundwater Survey and Development Agency Vijay Pakhmode were also present at the meeting. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, 20,000 households have been provided with direct tap water connections, benefitting approximately 8 million families in the state. The Deputy Chief Minister instructed the officials to take immediate action to provide tap water connections to the remaining households. The Marathwada Water Grid project is crucial for ending the region’s water scarcity, and Deputy Chief Minister Shinde emphasised the need to pursue special funding from the Central Government for this project. During the meeting, he also spoke to Union Minister for Water Resources, CR Patil, via telephone to discuss the Marathwada Water Grid project. During the meeting, the Deputy CM also reviewed the second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission Rural. He directed the Water Supply and Sanitation Department to focus on the construction of public toilets in rural areas, alongside the provision of toilets in households. Shinde reiterated the goal of achieving 100 per cent tap connections under the ‘Har Ghar Jal’ initiative within a 100-day campaign, and further directed officials that tap water connections should be provided for drinking water in schools and anganwadis as well.

'Law and order in Maharashtra collapsed after Fadnavis became Home Minister'

Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal criticised CM Devendra Fadnavis, blaming him for the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, following the alleged rape of a 26-year-old woman at Pune's Swargate bus depot, and accused him of prioritising the defence of corrupt officials over ensuring women's safety. Speaking to ANI, Sapkal said, "For some time now, incidents of exploitation of women have been reported continuously in Maharashtra...The law and order situation in Maharashtra collapsed after Devendra Fadnavis became the Home Minister...We are with the victim and our demand that culprits should be given the harshest punishment." During a Congress press conference, he further stated, "It is very disturbing that a young woman was raped at Swargate bus station in Pune on a bus in the state. The Home Minister is busy only defending corrupt officials and the question of the safety of women in the state has once again come to the fore. The rape of Pune has been hanged on the gates of law and order in the state," reported ANI. He also accused the government of doing "politics in the name of Ladki Bahin." Referring to a recent case in Mumbai, Sapkal alleged that the government attempted to shield the accused. "Maharashtra was shaken by the incident of sexual abuse of school girls in Mumbai, but the government tried to save the accused in the case by encountering the accused. The Chief Minister of the state, who speaks on all the issues, consciously keeps silent on important issues. Maharashtra has again been shaken by the incident of rape in Pune. A young woman was raped three years ago in Delhi. After that, there was a big mass movement. The incident in Pune is equally serious. Sapkal said that women are not safe in the state because the government is unique," reported ANI. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Police have confirmed that the accused has been identified and that efforts are underway to arrest him in connection with the Pune rape case. The incident occurred on Monday morning when the victim, a working woman, was waiting for a bus to return home, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Smarthana Patil. The accused allegedly misled her by claiming the bus to her destination was parked elsewhere. He then took her to a parked bus, where he allegedly committed the crime. Zone 2 DCP Smarthana Patil said, "A working woman was waiting for the bus to go back to her home...A man came and said that the bus to your place had been parked somewhere else and took the woman near the parked bus...Then, the man raped the woman," reported ANI. "A complaint has been registered...We have identified the accused, and we are making all the efforts to nab him. The accused is identified as Dattatray Ramdas Gade. The victim is stable right now...," she added. (With inputs from ANI)

BJP launched Ladki Bahin Yojana but couldn't save a daughter: AIMIM on Pune rape

AIMIM leader Waris Pathan has condemned the rape of a 26-year-old woman at Pune's Swargate bus depot and said that there was no law and order left in Maharashtra, reported news agency ANI. Speaking to ANI on Wednesday, Pathan questioned the safety of women in the state despite the government's "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" campaign and the "Ladki Bahin Yojana" scheme. "There is no law and order left in Maharashtra. I condemn this incident. You (BJP) speak about 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao', but are daughters safe in Maharashtra? Nobody has any fear of the law. Such incidents keep happening till the Police become strict. You (BJP) have made 'Ladki Bahin Yojana' but you couldn't save a daughter," he said, reported ANI. "We demand strict action against the accused; he should get the strictest punishment," the AIMIM leader asserted, reported ANI. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Tuesday condemned the incident, calling it shameful, painful, and infuriating. Addressing the matter, Pawar stated that he had personally directed the Pune Police Commissioner to closely monitor the investigation and ensure the immediate arrest of the accused. "The incident of rape of our sister at Pune's Swargate bus stand is extremely shameful, painful, and infuriating for every member of a civilised society. The crime committed by the accused is unforgivable, and there can be no punishment except the death penalty. I have personally instructed the Pune Police Commissioner to closely monitor the investigation and ensure immediate arrest of the accused," he said. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Vasant More, along with other party leaders, held a protest at the Swargate bus stand where the incident happened. Apart from this, National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of a distressing incident in which a 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped inside a Shivshahi bus at Pune's Swargate depot, said NCD in a statement. In response, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Director General of Police, Mumbai, seeking immediate action in the case. Condemning the crime in the strongest terms, the Commission highlighted the grave concerns over public safety, particularly as reports indicate that the accused remains absconding. Pune rape case: Police announce Rs 1 lakh reward for information about accused

The officials said that the Pune Police on Thursday announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for information leading to the arrest of a history-sheeter who allegedly raped a 26-year-old woman inside a state transport bus at the Swargate bus station in Pune, reported news agency PTI. As many as 13 police teams are working to track down accused Dattatray Ramdas Gade (37) who is on the run since the Pune rape case incident which took place on early Tuesday morning, an official said, reported PTI. A reward of Rs 1 lakh will be given to a person providing information about his whereabouts, Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar told PTI. Another police official said that information about Gade can be provided at numbers 020-24442769 or 9881670659, reported PTI. The informer's name will be kept secret, he added. Gade has half a dozen cases of theft, robbery and chain-snatching registered against him in Pune and adjoining Ahilyanagar district, and was out on bail since 2019 in one of the offences, reported PTI. Swargate in Pune City is one of the largest bus depots of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). According to the survivor woman, as she was waiting for a bus for Phaltan in Satara district at one of the platforms around 5.45 am on Tuesday, a man approached and engaged her in conversation, calling her 'didi' (sister), and said the bus for Satara had arrived at another platform, reported PTI. He took her to an empty 'Shiv Shahi' AC bus parked elsewhere on the sprawling station premises. As the lights inside the bus were not on, she hesitated to get in at first, but the man convinced her that it was the right vehicle. He then followed her inside and raped her before fleeing, the woman, who works in the medical field, told police, reported PTI. The shocking Pune rape case in the heart of the city caused an uproar, with Opposition lambasting the BJP-led Maharashtra government over women's safety. Meanwhile, Maharashtra's Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has ordered a departmental inquiry against the Assistant Transport Superintendent and the Bus Depot Manager of the Swargate Bus Depot in Pune following the February 25 incident in which a 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped inside a parked bus. According to the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) Minister Sarnaik "has given instructions to suspend them if they are found at fault in the inquiry." Additionally, the Transport Minister has instructed the MSRTC to replace all existing security personnel at the Swargate bus depot with new staff to ensure better safety measures and prevent such incidents in the future. The incident took place on Tuesday when the rape survivor, a working woman, was waiting for a bus to return home to Phaltan, which is located around 100 km away. She was allegedly approached by the accused, who falsely claimed that the bus to her destination was parked elsewhere. He led her to a MSRTC Shivsahi bus parked in the depot and followed her in where he allegedly raped her.  (With inputs from PTI)
