Christmas is here! Kick off the season of good spirit and cheer with two simultaneous choral performances over this weekend

Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o'er the plains and the mountains in reply, echoing their joyous strains...

It's time again for Bangaloreans across the city to join in that yearly refrain, celebrating peace on earth and goodwill to men. It's Christmas time!

And what's Christmas without its' carols? Our city, that's famed across the country for vocal talent, breaks into the Christmas season this weekend with a line-up like never before. Keep your weekend free and choose between the simultaneous performances or attend both! Whatever you choose, we can guarantee you won't be disappointed.

The first option for the weekend choir extravaganza is a performance by the Cecilian choir. Aptly titled A Musical Mosaic, an evening of select choral music, get there on time and let conductors Louise Pinto and Joan De Nazareth take you on a choral Christmassy journey, we're sure you'll love.

Keeping in touch with changing times, the show has been dedicated to choral versions of popular songs and will be divided into two parts.

The first part will include an acapella rendition of Michael Jackson's Man in the Mirror, a classic in a new avatar that's as amazing as the original.

The line-up will also include Fields of Gold by Sting, Viva la Vida by Cold Play and a medley from the hugely successful Broadway musical Jersey Boys.

Also look forward to choir renditions of classics like So Deep is the Night.

The second part will revisit a Christmas tradition that's fast disappearing. Catch a beautifully handled Christmas Cantata followed by the grand finale in Handel's masterpiece the Alleluia Chorus.

"We are more than 25 years old and a set of around 28 singers make up our choir. We've always focused on redefining choral traditions, but our primary focus is to give back to society from what we earn," says Louise, a member of the Cecilian Choir.

If that doesn't satiate your love for good music then head towards Christ University's world-class auditorium instead for the other two big performances of the weekend.

Magnificat: A song of hope is an annual choral festival that kicked off three years ago under the patronage of Sunil Chandy, the infamous Choir Conductor from (then) Christ College. Magnificat has come to be known for brilliant performances and an inimitable style that only few choirs in the country match up to. This year look forward to the Merry An Singers who are back again in town to perform once again for us.

MiD DAY reviewed their first performance in the city two years ago and we were gaga about what they had on offer. The troupe is a Colombo based choir that is conducted by Andrew and Mary Anne David. Sirlankan popstar Ranidu also passed through the a coveted learning experience in this choir.

"We are celebrating the hope of the season and this is a fellowship between choirs and various groups, who are celebrating the spirit of the season in their own unique way. We have all been gifted with talents to sing and create wonderful music, so why not use them to spread peace, cheer and goodwill something that Christmas stands for anyway!" says Sherin Jacob, the choir co-ordinator of the Christ University Choir.

Also look forward to performances by Jyoti Nivas College, St Joseph's College of Commerce, St Joseph's College of Arts and Science, Koramangala Methodist Church, Indiranagar Methodist Church, Koramangala Christalaya, Melvin Sawyer, and many more.
