It should be an eye-opener for those who curse the police for inaction.

Passengers travelling in a packed general compartment of a train were held hostage and robbed near the Narela railway station in Delhi. But only three police complaints have been lodged so far.

Though the police said it expects more complaints to be lodged in the case.

More than ten robbers boarded the Kalka-Delhi Himalayan Queen Express at Sonepat in Haryana. Armed with guns and knives, the assailants took the general bogey hostage on Sunday around 9.30 pm.

They robbed passengers of cash, jewellery, mobile phones and did not even spare their food.

A senior railway police official, wishing anonymity, said the robbers might be locals. "Train robbery is very rare in Delhi. They could be locals who knew that this being the festive season, passengers would be carrying jewellery and cash," he said.

Sudhakar, who boarded the train from Sonepat, said he saw two men inside the compartment with pistols.

"Even before I could have raised an alarm, 8-10 men suddenly held a few passengers at gun and knifepoint. I understood that something was very wrong and that we were in trouble," said Sudhakar.

Another passenger Gurdarshan Singh said the robbers beat men and women who tried to resist. "When women refused to part with their jewellery they threatened to rape them," he said.

After robbing the bogey in fast seven minutes, the robbers escaped by pulling the alarm chain of the train at a secluded place between Holambi Kalan and Narela railway stations.

"The robbers were wearing masks and armed with pistols. We have launched a massive manhunt. The culprits will soon be behind the bars," said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) Bhairon Singh Gurjar.
