Alcoholic sweeper ends life inside Air India Building

Colleagues find body of Haribhau Gadekar hanging in the ballroom; Gadekar had resumed work after management issued notice asking him to report to work or face action for his absence for last 40 days

A sweeper employed with Air India allegedly committed suicide in the ballroom of the Air India Building at Marine Drive yesterday. The police have ruled out possibility of foul play though they failed to find a suicide note on the deceased.

Officials of the Marine Drive police station said 53-year-old Haribhau Gadekar was an alcoholic and would frequently bunk work for which he was issued a notice by the management recently. It was Gadekar’s colleagues who found his body hanging in the ballroom around 2.30 pm.

They said Gadekar, a resident of Badlapur, had been working for the airline since 1996 and would often report to work drunk. He had not reported to work for the last 40 days following which the management served a notice, asking him to show up or face action.

“After reporting to work on Wednesday, he started asking for money from his colleagues. Gadekar asked for Rs 100 from each one of them,” said PSI Janardan Patil of the Marine Drive police station. DCP (Zone I) Ravindra Shishve said it appeared that Gadekar committed suicide after his colleagues left for their respective duties. He hanged himself with a wire that was attached to a beam. His body was sent for post-mortem to the GT Hospital. u00a0
