A major fire broke out in a flat in Hadapsar last evening. The house of Janice Fernandes, a resident of C-3 at Brahma Baug Society on B T Kawade Road, caught fire around 8.30 pm. It took firemen around two-and-a-half hours to control it.
Fire officials said, prima-facie, the fire was a result of a short circuit in the room where Fernandes had kept the computer.
Two fire tenders and a water tanker reached the spot from the PMC Fire Brigade office located in Industrial area, Hadapsar.
"It was really a big fire," said Shivaji Chavan, the on-duty fire officer. "We could douse the fire by using all the water in the tanker. We also shut down the electric supply in the building to prevent any other eventuality."
"This is the second fire incident in the same society within two years," said Chavan.
Fernandes was out with her 21-year-old daughter when the incident occurred. "It was a real shock for me that such a thing can happen to us and we had a major monetary loss," she said. "Fortunately we could shift to my mother's place, which is in the same society."
The computer set, printer, television, furniture and all the documents kept in the room were destroyed.
