Malavika SangghviDattaraj Salgaocar, the prominent Goan businessman and son-in-law of the late Dhirubhai Ambani (he is married to Dipti, Ambani’s daughter), has reason to cheer this week. His football team Goa FC defeated Ranbir Kapoor’s Mumbai City FC team 7-0 in the Indian Super League match held on Tuesday at the Fatorda stadium in Goa. The match also set the record for the most goals scored in the league so far with hat tricks from two of the Goan strikers. When we asked Salgaocar, a passionate football fan himself (he supports Real Madrid and has attended every World Cup in recent times), to comment on the win, he said, “I am very happy with the win, as we were playing with many injuries and a tough opponent.

The margin of victory of 7-0 is a gift to all our fans in Goa and all over India and the world who have supported and stood by us in our good times and bad times,” adding, “Every game matters and we have to continue to work hard and be focused, as it will be a close finish for the top 4 slots.” Incidentally, besides Brazilian legend Zico, Salgaoncar credits his own son Vikram Salgaocar, who has been looking over and travelling with the team for its turnaround. Vikram took to social media to share his excitement and posted, “Zico Zico what’s the score? 7-0 by the gaurs!” And with this win Goa go top of the league and are undisputedly the team to watch this season.

This generation’s Bhattacharjee
Bindu, Rana (Yes Bank) Kapoor’s infinitely shyer better half has been working tirelessly to promote the artist Sanjay Bhattacharya whose latest exhibition opens with a star-studded launch by Jaya Bachchan this week at the Jahangir. “He uses a unique technique of light and shade in his work which makes them very realistic,” said Kapoor about the painter who appears to be to this generation of art lovers what fellow Kolkata artist Bikash Bhattacharjee was to those of the nineties. Incidentally, Bhattacharya, who is returning to show in Mumbai after a hiatus of nine long years, has aptly called the exhibition ‘In Search of Lost Time’.

Dinner for Tina and Uma
“It was a dinner hosted by Uma and me for Tina Brown and also to celebrate Uma’s birthday,” said Delhi-based director Ramesh Sharma about an evening that he and his wife, the Congress politician and former MP Uma Gajapati Raju, had hosted this week for friends at their home in Gurgaon’s Garden Estate. “We had some friends over, including Suhel Seth, Suman Dubey, Ritu Beri, Pallam Raju, the former HRD Minister, Navin Chawla, Barkha Dutt and Siddarth Vardarajan among others!” said Sharma adding, “Tina as you know is a very close friend and our daughter Sanchaita is speaking at her Woman in the World Summit this weekend on her work providing water and sanitation!"

Ever so modest and shy, Sharma failed to mention that his own documentary Journalist & Jihadi (2006) on the beheading of Daniel Pearl was screened recently to great appreciation for a select audience including the Ambassador of USA to India Richard Varma, who spoke glowingly about the award winning film’s treatment and thorough research and the impact it had on him.

Catching up with Anjolie
We are looking forward to meet Anjolie Ela Menon next week in Mumbai. The noted artist will be in town for the opening of her exhibition of recent works at Art Musings in Colaba. Menon, who once lived in Mumbai where her naval officer husband Raja Menon was posted, credits the city for much of her artistic enterprise, painting her early works on ordinary hardwood planks, as a housewife at Dhanraj Mahal, while she tended to her two toddler sons and finding encouragement and mentorship from the likes of MF Husain, who she used to have long conversations with over cups of tea at the Samovar.

But in all other ways, Menon is quintessentially a Delhiite — politically aware and a caustic commentator on national and international affairs. We recall going to her exquisite and warm apartment at Nizamuddin on many an occasion where, if you were not aware of her vocation, it would be easy to think that she was just another housewife, interested in baking, entertaining and making jams and pickles all day and attending cozy dinners that spawned heated political debates in the evenings in Lutyen’s Delhi.

What does Menon, a fierce liberal and secularist, think of Modi’s leadership? We are looking forward to asking one of the art world’s most outspoken denizens about her views of recent occurrences in Dadri and Bihar on Monday at gallerist Vickram Sethi’s, where she will be the guest of honour, amongst a small group of her friends.

Senior citizen with cult following
Word comes in that the biggest buzz surrounding the upcoming Enchanted Valley Carnival, which will be held in Amby Valley next month is not do to with the headliners and marquee names like Tiesto and Fatboyslim, who will feature at the festival. The young and restless grapevine has been buzzing with the news of a special performance by the reclusive Artists that go by the name ‘Shpongle’ that now only make rare live appearances at festivals. The duo of Raja Ram and Simon Postford together have in many ways created their own genre of music, one that involves a mix of traditional sounds, acoustic guitars, Moroccan drums, Turkish operatic singing, cello, double bass, backing vocals and silver flute blended together with a stunning visual performance. “India always holds a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to get everyone Shpongled,” says the 73-year-old Ram, who we once bumped into in Goa a few years ago. And we can say he sure has all the characteristics of a cult phenomenon!
