Fun in the times of recession

On one hand there exists a blanket of gloom, while on the other hand some corporate houses are trying to bring in cheer for their employees through creative activities at workplace.

Take Bluelotus Communications, where Fridays isn't an ordinary day, they call it Freaky Friday. The day includes activities ranging from rotating crown and travelling bouquet, community lunch to colour coded attires to walking billboards. Blues and Bindass are two awards given away on the day. The phenomenon, they claim, brings them closer.

N Chandramouli, CEO, Bluelotus Communications said, "Friday takes the shape of anything. You have a crown for an hour, or you are a walking billboard. It's important to recognise human relationships. We showcase appreciation and bring in fun and positivism. We are a happier lot and it has brought us closer."

Shikha Johnson, a PR Executive at the company, says she can't wait for the day. "This is the best break we could get from our hectic schedules. We look forward to Fridays more than the weekends."

Chitra Pujari, who heads the Pune office, feels such activities not only induce fun, but also improves productivity.

Design Tech Systems celebrated Makar Sankranti with much fanfare. The office was decorated with bright rangoli, kites and sugarcane. This was added with a kite flying competition.

"There is little interaction between employees and such initiatives play a big role in bringing them together. The celebrations gave an impetus in lifting their spirits," said Meghana Kulkarni, assistant manager HR and
administration.

Zensar Technologies organised Zensar Dress for Success. The employees also organised a candle lighting ceremony to offer solidarity with Mumabikars. They also conducted a play in their campus titled Misal Pao.

"We have been investing a lot of time and effort to motivate our employees and keep them upbeat in uncertain times," Zensar's Global Head (HR) Prameela Kalive said.

For employees at the Taj, it was a matter of laughing out loud. Zakia Kazi, head of corporate communications, elaborated. "We have activities like laughter clubs and girls' meets. We did up the interiors in pink and red and played games. Each time we have a different themes."

Jaisurya Das, MD, Xnadu Consulting Group, an exclusive media and advertising talent search company, had a different take on this. "Bringing fun to workplace is of great importance in the current environment, which is ridden with insecurity," he said.

According to him, this was the time to hold hands. "This should not be an HR initiative only, but should come right from the top. It should be fun with a purpose," he added.
