Himachal Pradesh board of school education was established in 1969, as per Himachal Pradesh Act No. 14 of 1968 with its headquarters at Shimla. HP board had shifted their Headquarters to Dharamshala in the year 1983.

Around 1650 examination centers all over the state has also set up by board. Council conducts board exams every year and about 5,00,000 candidates appears in the board exams every year in the month of March.

The main agenda of this board is to recommend syllabus, courses of instruction, text books and to conduct examinations for school education in Himachal Pradesh. This board of education has been of extreme importance to the students, as this has provided qualitative education to the students which will be of extreme benefit in the long run.

In 2013, the total pass percentage results was 65.01 %. Girls beat the boys again, scoring top positions in science, arts and commerce streams. Approximately 1,03,297 candidates appeared for the HP board examination out of which 67,151 passed the examination whereas 21,362 were declared compartment / to appear again for the exam.
