Officials of the Crime Branch (Unit I) on Saturday seized pirated CDs and DVDs worth Rs 17.62 lakh from a roadside vendor in Deccan Gymkhana.
Three persons were arrested for selling the pirated CDs and DVDs. Two of their accomplices managed to escape. The arrested persons were identified as Pramod Joshi (30), Sudhir Sawant (24) and Rakesh Sable (25).u00a0

The raid was conducted following a complaint lodged by officials of Flair Enterprises, a Mumbai-based copyright company, claiming that some persons were selling pirated CDs and DVDs the copyrights of which were owned by the
company.
“We verified the information by sending a dummy customer to the CD stall near Garware Bridge in Deccan Gymkhana and confirmed that the owner was selling pirated CDs and DVDs of Flair Enterprises,” Police Inspector (Crime) Sunil Deshmukh said yesterday.
In the raid, the officials seized 6,000 DVDs, 5,400 MP3 audio CDs and 110 pornographic CDs, the collective worth of which was Rs 17.62 lakh.u00a0Deshmukh said the arrested persons were selling CDs and DVDs of Hindi and Marathi films for Rs 100 to Rs 150. He said the price of the original CDs was much higher.
“We have arrested three persons and a case has been registered against them at the Deccan Gymkhana police station under relevant sections of the Copyright Act,” he said. u00a0

The Social Security Cell on Saturday arrested a shop owner under the Copyright Act, 1957, for downloading songs from the internet and CDs on to cell phones and distributing these. u00a0The arrested person was identified as A S Enterprises owner Arif Mehboob Sayyad (37), a resident of Kondhwa.u00a0The police said Sayyad was also involved in downloading and distributing porn. “We acted on two complaints, from Ultra Distributor and Krunal Music Company,” PI Bhanu Pratap Barge said yesterday. A computer, memory cards and card readers worth Rs 35,000 were seized from the shop. A case was lodged at the Vishrambaug police station.u00a0
