Mujahid, a 26-year-old fruit vendor, who is accused of stealing several vehicles with the assistance of a police sub-inspector was released from police custody yesterday, following the intervention of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC).
Mujahid's mother has accused that her son has been illegally detained five times in the last one year by the police.

"In a span of one year, my son has been picked up five times, without any evidence.

I even bribed officers and told them to either get my son released or put him in jail. I can't stand how they detain and torture him," said Sahiba.
Syed Tabrez, the then sub inspector from Koramangala was suspended when the Mysore Crime Branch police found him riding a stolen bike with Mujahid.

"Tabrez suggested that we trade in stolen cars as he was not paid too well by the government. We were partners when the Mysore Crime Branch took me in custody," Mujahid said.
Inspector General of Police N S Megharik of the SHRC confirmed that he had received Sabiha's complaint.

"I called the police station and they released Mujahid, who has been charged with various cases of vehicle theft. He approached us two days ago complaining of police torture.
I can't divulge any more," Megharik said. The SHRC has launched a probe into Mujahid's alleged illegal detentions.
