Wife-burning: No complaint filed by cops

Even after Commissioner of Police Satyapal Singh's decision to establish women's cells in police stations, it seems crimes against women continue to be treated with apathy. On Tuesday Rani Chandane (21) named her husband as the culprit in her dying declaration, yet the Bhosari police have not registered a complaint against him.

The Bhosari police station is among 15 in the city with a women's cell, which is meant to address crimes against women.

The deceased's parents claim that Chandane's husband Ganesh had poured kerosene on her and set her on fire on Sunday night. She succumbed to her injuries yesterday. Despite constant visits to the police station by the deceased's relatives, no complaint was registered against her husband.

"I have prepared a draft but there is a difference of opinion among the deceased's relatives on whether to register a complaint before or after the funeral," said Senior Police Inspector Sudhir Aspat. "Since they did not sign the document, I could not register the complaint."

When Chandane was taken to Sassoon, she had said that it was an accident. But later on Tuesday around 11 pm, she gave a fresh statement to the police, claiming that her husband had poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.
