INSV Tarini arrives in Cape Town on Navika Sagar Parikrama II expedition

INSV Tarini has successfully arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, marking the completion of the fourth leg of the Navika Sagar Parikrama II (NSP II) expedition. The vessel and its crew received a warm welcome from Ms Ruby Jaspreet, Consul General of India in Cape Town, Rear Admiral (JG) Lisa Hendricks, Chief of Staff of the South African Navy Fleet, and Captain Atul Sapahia, Defence Adviser of India in Pretoria. To celebrate the occasion, the South African Naval Band performed as the vessel docked at the port. The NSP II expedition, which was flagged off on 2nd October 2024 by Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, from Goa, is being undertaken by two women officers of the Indian Navy: Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A. The mission aims to cover more than 23,400 nautical miles (approximately 43,300 kilometres) over an eight-month period, with a planned return to Goa in May 2025. So far, the expedition has included stopovers at Fremantle (Australia), Lyttelton (New Zealand), and Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands (United Kingdom). During their time in Cape Town, INSV Tarini will be stationed at the Royal Cape Yacht Club for two weeks for scheduled maintenance and repairs. The crew will also engage in interactions with the South African Navy at Simon’s Town Naval Base and Gordon’s Bay Naval College. Additionally, community outreach events have been planned as part of their visit. The crew has encountered treacherous weather conditions throughout their journey, facing rough seas, extremely cold temperatures, and stormy weather. Winds have exceeded 50 knots (93 km/h), and waves have reached heights of up to seven metres (23 feet), making the circumnavigation a highly demanding and formidable challenge. INSV Tarini, an indigenously built 56-foot sailing vessel, was inducted into the Indian Navy in 2018 and has since been a part of multiple expeditions. The vessel stands as a symbol of the ‘Make in India’ and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives of the Indian Government, showcasing India's advancements in indigenous shipbuilding. Beyond its maritime significance, the Navika Sagar Parikrama-II expedition also serves as a platform for promoting women’s empowerment within the Indian Armed Forces. It is expected to inspire young women to consider careers in the Services, particularly in the Indian Navy. Furthermore, this edition of the expedition aims to contribute to marine and scientific research. The stopover of INSV Tarini in Cape Town underscores the strengthening maritime relations between India and South Africa. India remains committed to deepening its maritime cooperation with friendly nations in the Indian Ocean Region. In recent months, Indian Naval Ship Talwar participated in the eighth edition of Exercise IBSAMAR in October 2024 in South Africa. In January 2025, the latest stealth frigate of the Indian Navy, INS Tushil, made a port call in Durban, engaging with the South African Navy and the Indian community in KwaZulu-Natal. Such naval visits and interactions foster collaboration between the two navies, enabling them to address shared maritime challenges and exchange best practices to ensure safe and secure seas. INSV Tarini is scheduled to depart from Cape Town on 15th April 2025, as it embarks on the next phase of its remarkable journey.

Waqf Amendment Bill takes centre stage during Eid prayers

Eid-ul-Fitr, a festival marking the end of the holy month of Ramzan, is being celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country. However, the celebrations were accompanied by some protests and heightened security measures in various places over the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025. The issue of the Waqf Bill took center in parts of the country on Monday, with people, donning  ‘black armbands’ to protest . In Karnataka, sports and youth empowerment minister Rahim Khan, offered special prayers sporting black armbands to express their protest against the Centre’s move. Believers sported symbols of protest during the prayers held in Bidar, Mandya and Belagavi. The Mandya Urban Development Authority president Naheem performed prayers in Mandya wearing the black armband. Speaking to reporters, he said he did it as a silent protest against the Waqf Bill. In Belagavi, SDPI cadres participated in the prayers wearing black armbands. In Hyderabad, a protest was held outside the Ujale Shah Eidgah in Saidabad, where a group of people tied black bands around to express their opposition to the Waqf Bill. Similarly, in Aishbagh, people gathered to offer prayers, but a few also took part in protests against the bill. Security measures were heightened in several cities to ensure the smooth and peaceful celebration of Eid. Let amended law come Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) Chairman and BJP MP Jagdambika Pal on Monday questioned the ‘black band’ protest against the Waqf bill when the amendment law had not been passed. “While many Muslim clerics are supporting this Bill, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board is objecting to it. They asked people to wear black armbands in protest against this Bill, and even today, on Eid, they have appealed to people to protest against this bill. But why? First, let the amended law come.”  Further, he stated that while Muslims were thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the ‘Saugat-e-Modi’, Congress, Owaisi and AIMPLB were looking at Muslims as their vote bank and doing appeasement. Waqf (Amendment) Bill The Union Cabinet recently approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025,  incorporating the changes recommended by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), paving the way for it to be tabled in Parliament for a discussion and passage. The Bill was itroduced on August 8, 2024, in the Lok Sabha with an aim to streamline the Waqf Board’s work and ensure the efficient management of Waqf properties. The Bill was later referred to the JPC.  The parliamentary panel had adopted the report with a majority vote, while all 11 MPs from opposition parties in the panel had objected to it. On March 28 Union Home Minister Amit Shah made it clear that the Bill, which was referred to a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) in August 2024, will be reintroduced in the current session of Parliament.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Kathua op: Search intensified, 6 held

Security forces have intensified search operations using aerial surveillance and sniffer dogs following a night-long cordon after fresh reports of suspected movement of three individuals, believed to be terrorists, who escaped a recent encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, officials said. Two terrorists and four policemen were killed while three others, including a deputy superintendent of police, were injured during a gunfight in a remote forested area in the Sanyal belt of the district on Thursday. Security forces, which have picked up six persons for questioning, have also launched a search operation in Samba sector near the international border to sanitise the area, while the entire border belt has been put on alert, officials said.  On Sunday night, three suspected terrorists entered a house in Rui village, several kilometres from the encounter site, and took away food from her kitchen, they said. Aided by aerial surveillance and sniffer dogs, the army, police, NSG, CRPF and BSF are engaged in a multi-tier operation to track down the terrorists in the forest belts of Rui, Juthana, Ghati and Sanyal in the Rajbagh region, and parts of Billawar, the officials said. The joint operation teams are also focusing on the overground and underground networks of the terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad in areas along the International Border (IB), they said. Police are also tracking a group of terrorists after intercepting them on March 23 within a ‘dhok’, a local term for an enclosure in a nursery, in Sanyal village near the International Border with Pakistan. India rejects NYT report on tech transfer to Moscow

A report in The New York Times (NYT) linking a company that is part of a British aerospace major to a state-run Indian defence firm claiming that the latter has ties with a Russian arms agency is “factually incorrect” and “misleading”, official sources said on Monday. The NYT report, citing “documents”, claimed that one of the biggest corporate donors to the populist Reform UK party has sold almost $2 million worth of transmitters, cockpit equipment, antennas and other sensitive technology to a major supplier of Moscow’s blacklisted state weapons agency Rosoboronexport.  The report has “tried to frame issues and distort facts to suit a political narrative”, the sources said, adding the media outlet “overlooked” basic due diligence. “The Indian entity mentioned in the report has scrupulously followed all its international obligations on strategic trade controls and end-user commitments,” said a source. Jammu and Kashmir: Encounter breaks out between security forces and terrorists

An exchange of fire between security forces and terrorists was reported in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district, officials said on Tuesday. "An exchange of fire between security forces and terrorists started late last night in the Billawar area of Kathua after security forces launched a massive search and cordon operation in the area," the Jammu and Kashmir Police said. The security forces have cordoned off the area, and a search operation is currently underway to track down the terrorists. Further details are awaited as the operation continues. On Monday, the security forces intensified their actions against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua. According to Shiv Kumar Sharma, DIG, Jammu-Samba-Kathua range, the operation to track down terrorists in the region is still on, due to which some people have also been detained by the police. "Jammu and Kashmir Police will continue its operation until the terrorists are neutralised. Every soldier of ours is committed to killing every terrorist selectively so that our area remains safe. The Army is with us, and everyone is conducting search operations together as a team. We have an international border and people are very alert and give us information on which we take action," Shiv Kumar Sharma said while speaking to reporters on Monday. Furthermore, DIG Sharma said that the force is "sad" as they lost their one jawan in the Kathua encounter. However, he emphasised that the soldiers' training is very good and stated that their morale is really high. Authorities have placed the entire region on high alert as the search operation continues to track down potential threats. Earlier, during the counter-terror operation 'Safiyan' in the Kathua region, four Jammu and Kashmir police personnel lost their lives in the operation, while two terrorists were gunned down. Security forces recovered war-like stores from the encounter site. The operation began on March 23, when locals reported the sighting of suspected Pakistani infiltrators in Sanyal. "Vande Bharat Express to cut Katra-Srinagar journey to just 3 hours"

Northern Railway's Chief Public Relations Officer, Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, on Monday said that the completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project will significantly reduce travel time between Katra and Srinagar. The new Vande Bharat Express will cut down the travel time from the current 6-7 hours by road to just 3 hours. "The Vande Bharat Express train will cut the Katra-Srinagar journey to just 3 hours, compared to the current 6-7 hours by road. At present, train services run between Srinagar and Sangaldan in the valley. Once the railway line from Sangaldan to Katra becomes operational, these trains can be extended to Katra," he said. Upadhyay said that the USBRL project Qazigund-Baramulla section was started in the year 2009. "The 18 km Banihal-Qazigund section was operational in 2013, the 25 km Udhampur-Katra in 2014, the Banihal to Sangaldan in 2023 and now the Sangaldan to Katra section will be operational. The world's tallest rail arch bridge, Chenab Bridge, is a part of this project. The tunnels, bridges and valleys will make rail travel more enjoyable," he added. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district to inaugurate the Vande Bharat train, which will undertake the journey from Jammu to Srinagar via Katra district, on April 19. Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that the train services for the inaugural Vande Bharat would start from Katra, temporarily, since the Jammu railway station remains under construction. Highlighting the importance of the inaugural event, the Union Minister said that the Vande Bharat would connect the Kashmir Valley to the rest of the country. "PM Narendra Modi will visit Udhampur on April 19 to inaugurate the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat, and the service is being started from Katra temporarily because of the Jammu railway station being under construction... This will be a grand event connecting Kashmir Valley to the rest of the country," Singh told reporters here. On January 23, Indian Railways conducted the trial run of the first Vande Bharat train from the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) railway station to the Srinagar railway station. The train will run through Anji Khad Bridge which is India's first cable-stayed railway bridge and Chenab Bridge which is the highest railway bridge in the world. This train has been designed keeping in mind the cold climate conditions of the Kashmir valley. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that several countries had shown interest in importing semi-high-speed Vande Bharat trains from India. Indian Railways launched India's first indigenous semi-high-speed train Vande Bharat Express and it is regarded as a 'Make in India' success story. The first Vande Bharat Express train was flagged off on February 15, 2019, on the New Delhi-Kanpur-Allahabad-Varanasi route, running at a speed of 160 kilometres per hour. BJP MLA claims Beed Sarpanch murder accused Walmik Karad was assaulted in jail

Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Suresh Dhas on Monday claimed that the Beed Sarpanch murder accused, Walmik Karad, was assaulted by members of a rival gang. However, a senior prison official has denied the Beed legislator’s claims, news agency PTI reported. Meanwhile, hours after Dhas made the statement, officials transferred four prisoners from Beed jail to the Harsul facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. One of them alleged that they had been assaulted at the behest of Karad, who is lodged in Beed district jail. Earlier in the day, Dhas stated that the alleged assault on Karad and co-accused Sudarshan Ghule was triggered by a disagreement over making a phone call from a room allotted to inmates for talking to their family members, as provided by the jail administration. According to PTI, he cited "complaints" that "aka (apparently referring to Karad)" had access to a "special phone" and special food in the jail, and demanded that the Beed superintendent of police (SP) visit the prison. The Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Ashti in Beed district suggested that the longstanding rivalry between local gangster Baban Gitte and Karad could have led to the alleged assault. According to Dhas, Gitte’s supporters clashed with Karad and Ghule inside the prison. "Karad's rivalry with Gitte goes back a long time. Karad used to say he would not wear footwear until he killed Baban, while Baban would say he would not shave until Walmik was dead," said the ruling party legislator, who has been regularly speaking on the Beed Sarpanch murder case. However, BN Mulani, Superintendent of Beed District Jail, in a statement clarified that there had been no assault on Karad or his co-accused Ghule inside the prison as reported by a section of the media. According to PTI, Mulani stated that there was an incident on Monday morning where two inmates under judicial custody — Sudeep Sonavane and Rajesh Waghmode — had a verbal altercation when they assembled in the room allotted to prisoners to make phone calls to their family members. The prison’s security personnel intervened immediately, separated the two, and brought the situation under control, he said. A case in this regard has been registered at the Shivajinagar Police Station, the statement added. In the evening, jail officials transferred Gitte and the three others to Harsul Jail in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, PTI reported. While sitting in the police vehicle, Gitte claimed that he and the others were beaten up on the instructions of Karad. He demanded that CCTV footage from the jail be reviewed. Gitte is an accused in the murder case of another sarpanch, Bapu Andhale. Dhas had demanded that Karad, an aide of Nationalist Congress Party (leader) and former state minister Dhananjay Munde, as well as the other accused arrested in Beed Sarpanch murder case be moved to a jail either in Amravati district or Nagpur in the Vidarbha region. Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, was abducted and tortured to death on December 9 last year, allegedly for attempting to stop an extortion bid targeting an energy company. Eight persons, including Karad, have been arrested so far and booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). The other arrested accused are Sudarshan Ghule, Vishnu Chate, Jairam Chate, Mahesh Kedar, Sudhir Sangale, Prateek Ghule, and Siddharth Sonawane. One Krishna Andhale remains wanted in the case. Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday accused the Uttar Pradesh Police of preventing him from attending Eid celebrations, calling the move as "dictatorship" and "emergency"."What should I understand from this? Should I understand it as dictatorship or emergency?" Akhilesh Yadav questioned, while speaking to ANI.The former Chief Minister (CM) accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of "not running" the country according to the Constitution. He claimed that his convoy was halted and with only one vehicle being allowed to proceed.  "When I was coming here today (to attend Eid celebrations), the police deliberately stopped me. After talking for half an hour, I was allowed to go ahead. When I wanted to know why this was being done, no officer had any answer.
