Pune finally got some respite from the scorching summer heat as heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunder and strong winds, lashed the city on Thursday. However, the downpour, which caught many off guard, led to waterlogging, power cuts and heavy traffic snarls in the city. The civic body reported that an iron shed collapsed at a construction site near Balewadi and Bharati Vidyapeeth School, injuring one person and damaging several vehicles. Four Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) fire engines reached the spot immediately after receiving information about the incident. The injured person received medical treatment in a government ambulance. Meanwhile, heavy traffic snarls were witnessed across Pune city. Power supply disruptions were widely reported in Nigdi, Bhavdhan, and Kothrud areas. Many residents also took to their X accounts to express their frustration over the power cut in Bhavdhan for more than three-and-a-half hours. The intense spell of rain led to knee-deep waterlogging in the areas of BT Kawade Road, Jaisinghrao Sasane Garden, and other parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert (heavy rainfall) for Central Maharashtra, Vidharbha and Marathwada regions. The weather bureau has predicted unseasonal rainfall with thunderstorms for the next three days and issued an orange alert for Pune, Satara, Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, and Gondia. The remaining districts are under a yellow alert (moderate rainfall). IMD had earlier warned of continuous rainfall with hailstorms and lightning till Thursday, urging citizens to remain cautious. Speaking to Mid-Day, IMD scientist SD Sanap said, "On Thursday, almost the entire Pune City reported rainfall, accompanied with a thunderstorm. On Wednesday, heavy rainfall was witnessed in some parts of city area as well as in Junnar and Daund."

Modi said Prime Minister Shinawatra presented him with the Tripitaka. "On behalf of the Buddha-land India, I accepted it with folded hands," he added. The centuries-old relationship between India and Thailand is tied to their deep cultural and spiritual threads, he said. The spread of Buddhism has connected our people at every level, Modi said. 03 April,2025 04:02 PM IST | New Delhi | PTIThe Supreme Court on Thursday refused to relax the ban imposed on the manufacture, storage and sale on firecrackers in Delhi-NCR noting air pollution levels had remained alarming for a considerable time. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan said a large section of the population worked on streets and was the worst affected by pollution. Not everybody can afford an air purifier at their residence or place of work to fight pollution, the bench said. "Several orders passed by this court during last six months bring on the record the horrible situation with which prevailed in Delhi due to very high levels of air pollution...Right to health is an essential part of Article 21 of the constitution so is the Right to live in a pollution free atmosphere," the court said. Unless the court was satisfied that the pollution due to the "so-called" green crackers was bare minimum, there was no question of reconsidering the previous orders, it added. The top court said the orders passed from time to time would indicate that the directions and ban on the use of firecrackers was warranted by an "extraordinary situation" created in Delhi. 03 April,2025 02:40 PM IST | Chandigarh | mid-day online correspondentOn Thursday, Union Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju introduced a motion for the consideration of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill of 2025 and the Musalmaan Wakf (Repeal) Bill in the Rajya Sabha. While speaking in the upper house of Parliament, Rijiju referenced the Sachar committee report, which suggested expanding the central Waqf council and state Waqf boards to enhance inclusivity. He also provided details about the number of Waqf properties, noting that the Sachar committee estimated the earnings from 4.9 lakh properties at Rs 12,000 in 2006. "As of today, there are 8.72 lakh Waqf properties. In 2006, if the Sachar committee had estimated the earnings from 4.9 lakh Waqf properties at Rs 12,000 crore, then you can imagine the income these properties must be generating now. The Sachar committee also recommended that the central Waqf council and state Waqf board should be broadened to make them inclusive. The committee also recommended specific steps to be taken for the (benefit) of women and children," Rijiju said. According to the ANI reports, The minister referred to the recommendations of the previous Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) chaired by senior Congress leader K Rahman Khan, which highlighted various issues with the Waqf board that required rectification, including the improvement of the infrastructure of the board. "A joint parliamentary committee under the leadership of K Rahman Khan, who served as a minority affairs minister, raised the issue regarding infrastructure (of Waqf) while pointing out the fewer manpower and funds. He said that the entire thing is focused on appointing or removing the Mutawalli," he added. Rijiju urged Congress and its allies to support the Waqf Amendment Bill stating that all the recommendations given by previous committees have been incorporated into the newly amended bill. "All these recommendations given earlier have been incorporated in the newly amended bill. These committees were under UPA and Congress. Thus, I appeal to Congress party and its allies to support Waqf Amendment Bill 2025," he said. Rijiju stated that the Ministry of Minority Affairs had drafted the bill after consulting various stakeholders across the country. He mentioned that a total of 284 organisations provided feedback on the bill, and over one crore people submitted memorandums to express views on it. "Before the joint parliamentary committee was formed, many said that the consolation regarding it wasn't enough. I want to say that before the Waqf Amendment Bill was introduced, the ministry of minority affairs came to prepare the bill after taking in confidence the stakeholders, including the minority commission of the state governments," the Parliamentary Affairs minister said. "The JPC has done a comprehensive work, more than any other JPC formed previously. In totality, 284 organisations across different regions gave opinions. Over one crore people submitted memorandums to register their opinions to the JPC and the ministry. This is historic," he added. (With ANI inputs)
03 April,2025 02:34 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentLeader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Thursday claimed that China had taken over 4,000 square kilometre of Indian territory and that reciprocal tariffs or import duties imposed by the US would "completely devastate" the Indian economy, as he demanded answers from the government over these issues. Speaking during the Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi slammed the government over the celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties by India and China. "China is sitting on 4,000 square kilometre of our territory. I was shocked some time back to see that our foreign secretary (Vikram Misri) was cutting a cake with the Chinese ambassador. The question is -- what exactly is happening to this territory of 4,000 sq km that China has taken?" the former Congress president said. Referring to the Galwan incident, Gandhi said 20 jawans were martyred in 2020. "There is a celebration taking place over their martyrdom by cutting a cake. We are not against normalcy but there should be status quo before that. We should get our land back. It has also come to my notice that the President and the Prime Minister have written to the Chinese," he said. "We are not finding this out from our own people, it is the Chinese ambassador who is telling the people of India that the PM and the President have written to them," Gandhi said. He said foreign policy is about managing the external countries and pointed out that on one hand, "you have given China 4,000 sq km of our land", and on the other hand our ally US has suddenly decided to impose tariffs on us. He said the tariffs imposed by the US are going to "completely devastate" the Indian economy, particularly sectors like the auto industry, pharmaceuticals and agriculture. "Somebody once asked Indira Gandhi ji-- 'In the matter of foreign policy you lean left or you lean right', and Indira Gandhi ji answered 'I don't lean left or right, I stand straight. I am Indian and I stand straight'. T "The BJP and the RSS have a different philosophy, when they are asked whether they lean left or the right, they say 'no, no, no, we bow our head in front of every foreigner that comes in front of us. This is something that is in their culture, in their history, we know that," Gandhi said. He said the government of India must give answers as to "what is it doing about our land and about these tariffs that our ally has imposed on us". The US has announced 27 per cent reciprocal tariffs on India, saying New Delhi imposes high import duties on American goods. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 03 April,2025 02:10 PM IST | New Delhi | PTIOn Thursday, Congress Member of Parliament Amarinder Singh Raja Warring strongly criticised the NDA government accusing it of deliberately working to divide the country and marginalise a community following the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha. Warring expressed concern that the government’s actions, particularly through the introduction and passage of such legislation, were aimed at sidelining and disadvantaging the Muslim community. While speaking to ANI, Congress MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said, "This bill sidelines one community... The same conditions have not been imposed on other religions as on the Waqf Board... It is not right to make people from other communities members of the Waqf Board... They (NDA) are trying to divide this country. They are trying to subdue the communities that do not vote for them by weakening them economically... They did the same to the farmers to make them accept RSS ideology..."Earlier on Thursday, Sonia Gandhi, the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Union Government. Stalin argued that the bill, despite facing widespread opposition, was passed at 2 AM with the support of alliance parties, calling it an 'attack on Indian democracy.' Addressing the Assembly, CM Stalin said, "On March 27, we have passed a resolution unanimously, except the BJP, in the Tamil Nadu assembly to take back the Waqf board amendment bill, which is against the integrity of the Indian nation and for minorities," reported ANI. Stalin further added, "Most political parties in India have opposed the bill. It is severely condemnable that this bill was passed in parliament despite much opposition. 232 parliament members voted against it, and 288 members voted in favour of it. It's not normal that, despite its passing, 232 is the highest number. Numbers ( Against )would have increased. This amendment is not just to be opposed but should be fully taken back is our view. That's what we have passed a resolution in the assembly." "Despite the majority political parties' opposition, with the help of some alliance parties, passing the bill by early morning 2 AM is a blow against Indian Democracy and an act to disturb religious things," Stalin stated while addressing the assembly. Stalin added, "So considering this, today we wore black badges and came to assembly session. From DMK, we will approach the Supreme Court on this waqf amendment bill." According to ANI, Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi also opposed the timing and intent behind the Waqf (Amendment) Bill that was passed in the Lok Sabha, charging that the legislation was a ruse of the ruling government to divert attention from the US reciprocal tariff announcement. The Rajya Sabha is set to discuss the Waqf Amendment Bill at 1 PM, with an allocation of eight hours for the debate. On Wednesday, the Lok Sabha passed the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 after a marathon and heated debate, during which members of the INDIA bloc fiercely opposed the legislation while the BJP and its allies strongly supported it, saying it would bring transparency and enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards.
