The event was organised as part of the Jain community's Moksha Kalyanak Nirvana Mahotsav under the Shri 1008 Adinath Bhaktaambar Prachar initiative. A 65-foot temporary stage’s wooden stairs in the Maanstambh Complex gave way, causing devotees on and near the structure to fall.
District Magistrate Asmita Lal confirmed that five people had died and around 40 were injured, with 20 discharged after first aid and the rest undergoing treatment. Eyewitnesses reported a delay in medical assistance, claiming some injured individuals were transported to hospitals in e-rickshaws due to a lack of ambulances.
Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya stated that organisers had obtained permission for the event and that an investigation into the incident is underway. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to ensure proper medical care for the injured and extended wishes for their speedy recovery.
The annual event has been held in the area for the past 30 years, with no major incidents reported previously. The Samajwadi Party (SP) criticised the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government, alleging negligence and a lack of crowd control at the festival.
The SP claimed that government and administrative carelessness led to inadequate safety measures and a failure to monitor the event. The party accused the Yogi Adityanath administration of prioritising religious spectacles over ensuring the safety and security of attendees.
