Colombia initially refused to accept two deportation flights from the U.S. carrying migrants, but later changed its stance. Colombian President Gustavo Petro offered his presidential plane to help repatriate migrants after the U.S. launched an aggressive deportation policy under President Trump. In response to Colombia’s rejection, Trump imposed heavy sanctions, including a 25% tariff on Colombian goods, which would increase to 50% in a week. He also issued travel bans and financial sanctions. Colombia quickly retaliated with a threat of a 50% tariff on U.S. goods. Mexico, also asked by the U.S. to take in migrants, refused but faced no similar consequences. Facing economic pressure, Petro eventually agreed to help with the repatriation.
