The Shiv Sena's second attack on cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar notwithstanding, it is still India and not just Mumbai for Sachin. The batsman who recently completed 20 years of his international career, specially autographed 20 cricket bats with the words, 'Thank you India, for 20 years of love'.
These autographed bats were put up on the online auction site eBay India one week ago.u00a0 The 20 bats have collectively sold for Rs 24,57,000. Proceeds are to go to Apnalay, a Mumbai based charity. Incidentally, Sachin's mother-in-law Annabel Mehta is part of Apnalay.
The bidders had to bid for one bat each and the highest bidder (from the United Kingdom) has paid
Rs 3, 51,111 for a single bat. He is a UK resident of Indian origin. The second highest bidder is from Mumbai.u00a0
The third highest is from New Delhi. The fourth is from the US, fifth from Goa and sixth from Bangalore. There are also two bidders from Pune within the 20 who have won the bats.
Says Deepa M Thomas, senior manager, Corporate Communications & Pop Culture, eBay India, "Company policy forbids us to reveal the names of the buyers. We can confirm though that there were 37 bids in all. The bats are new, similar to the ones Sachin plays with currently."
According to Thomas, Sachin has also agreed to meet with the 20 highest bidders, "Though the details of which would be finalised in a few days time. He would meet them in either Mumbai or Delhi.
The winners would have a photo opportunity with Sachin. We expected Rs 10 lakh from the auction but it has exceeded expectations."
