IPL 2025: Sharma thanks these two players for support after smashing 141 runs

In the IPL 2025 match against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) explosive batsman, Abhishek Sharma, registered the highest individual score by an Indian in the league's history. In the run chase of 246 runs, Abhishek smashed 141 runs off just 55 deliveries, including 14 boundaries and 10 maximums. Before the knock, the left-hander was suffering from a high fever. But on Saturday night, the star batsman stated that if he did something on that day, it would be for the "Orange Army." Sharma was running a high fever for the majority of the six-day break that SRH got ahead of the home game, but he woke up on Saturday envisioning a match-winning contribution. Also Read: Jyothi Vennam/Rishabh Yadav pair bags Compound Mixed Team gold in Archery World Cup Stage 1 in USA "To be honest, I wrote it today only because usually I wake up and write something. So, today I got a random thought that if I do something today, that will be for the Orange Army. So, luckily, today was my day," said Sharma who took that note from his pocket as part of his celebration for the 40-ball hundred. Abhishek Sharma stated how Yuvraj Singh and Suryakumar Yadav helped him keep his spirits high. "To be honest, I was sick for four days. I had temperature. But I am very grateful to have people like Yuvraj Singh and Suryakumar around me. Because they were the ones who were continuously calling me," said Sharma when asked about the six-day break. "Because they knew that I can do something like this. But still, as an individual, you can start doubting yourself. But they believed in me and when someone like them believes in you, you obviously start believing again. So, it was just a matter of one innings for me," said the southpaw. The 24-year-old's luck was also in his favour, but he also accepted that there was pressure before the match. "If I say no, it will be a lie. Obviously, there is pressure if you are not doing 3-4 innings well. Especially if you are losing the match. But, as I said earlier in the ceremony, I didn't feel that there was anyone in the team who was down after losing four games in a row." (With PTI Inputs)

"Just banter": Travis Head on spat with Maxwell, Stoinis

After the completion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 encounter against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener Travis Head opened up and shared his thoughts on the verbal spat between him and Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis during the ninth over of the 27th fixture of the ongoing 18th edition of the cash-rich league. During the ninth over of the innings, Glenn Maxwell was brought into the attack. On the third and fourth deliveries of the over, Head slammed two consecutive sixes off Maxwell, which frustrated him. After the two sixes, Maxwell exchanged a few words with the Hyderabad opener. After the completion of the over, Head walked up to Maxwell and responded, sparking a heated verbal exchange between the two. The situation escalated until the on-field umpire stepped in to finish the spat. Soon after, Marcus Stoinis, fellow Australian and Punjab Kings all-rounder, joined in and was seen engaging in a fresh argument with Head. Speaking at the post-match presentation on the verbal exchange, the 31-year-old player said, "You bring out the best and the worst in each other when you know them so well, nothing too serious, just a bit of banter." "Not bad, nice to get on the winners list. It was an exceptional night; we needed it. We had our work cut out at the halfway point. We gave ourselves a chance, showed a bit more patience at the start. We knew the plans they were going to come with. Gave ourselves a bit more time and got off to a flyer. We did the things we did really well last year, and that's what made us such a good partnership. It's just about encouraging each other, picking our targets and setting the stage. We've seen 270-280 scored on that wicket. We've played on slightly different wickets, but no.2 seems to put out big scores. Everything had to go right for us to chase down 240," the Australian batter added. Coming to the match, PBKS won the toss and elected to bat first. A 66-run stand between Priyansh Arya (36 in 13 balls, with two fours and four sixes) and Prabhsimran Singh (42 in 23 balls, with seven fours and a six) started off things well for PBKS. Later, a half-century from skipper Shreyas Iyer (82 in 36 balls, with six fours and six sixes) and a final flourish from Marcus Stoinis (34* in 11 balls, with a four and four sixes) powered PBKS to 245/6 in their 20 overs. Harshal Patel (4/42) and Eshan Malinga (2/45) were among the wicket-takers for SRH. In the run-chase of 246 runs, Abhishek (141 in 55 balls, with 14 fours and 10 sixes) and Travis Head (66 in 37 balls, with nine fours and three sixes) started off well with a 171-run partnership. After Head was dismissed, Abhishek continued to rage while Heinrich Klaasen (21*) and Ishan Kishan (9*) put some finishing touches, chasing down the mammoth total. This is also the second-highest run chase in IPL history, with 262 chased by PBKS against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) last year being at the top. SRH has risen to the eighth spot with two wins and four losses while PBKS is at sixth place, with three wins and two losses. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Wicket wasn't easy, strike rotation wasn't as good, says Gill after loss to LSG

Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill was not too pleased with the performance of his players against Lucknow Super Giants here on Saturday, saying that while the wicket was on the slower side, the strike rotation left a lot to be desired. LSG, capitalising on half-centuries by Aiden Markram (58) and the brilliant Nicholas Pooran (61) defeated GT by six wickets, overhauling the 181-run target with three balls to spare. While GT openers, Sai Sudharsan (56) and Gill (60), too gave their side a solid start with a 120-run partnership, the middle-order could not adapt to the slow nature of the wicket, thus failing to score at a brisk pace. "The wicket wasn't easy to hit from the get-go and this was the conversation that if there's one batsman set we have to play 17-18 overs so we can get to 200-210," said Gill at the post match presentation ceremony. "Losing back-to-back wickets didn't help our cause. When we were batting, the ball was stopping; it wasn't an easy wicket from the first ball. Our strike rotation wasn't as good as expected and that's something we have to work on," added the GT skipper, whose side lost its top podium place to Delhi Capitals following the defeat. Gill acknowledged that the team was trying to remain in the game after the below-par score but said the fighting spirit shown by his players gave him confidence going forward. "We were behind the game but if we got a few quick wickets, we could take the match deep. We got a few wickets after the 10th over but the ball didn't stop as much as we thought it would. "Fighting till the end was a good sign for us. That was the conversation in the second timeout, that we'll take it as deep as possible," he added. In sharp contrast to Gill's assessment of the wicket, LSG's Nicholas Pooran, who continues to lead the scoring charts with 349 runs, including four half-centuries, said the pitch played beautifully. "It was absolutely a beautiful wicket to bat on. It's not much talk. As a group we know we have depth in our batting line-up. Unfortunately Mitch (Mitchell Marsh) didn't play so Rishabh (Pant) stepped up and played," said Pooran. "Nice to see Aiden (Markram) get a start and carry on. I surprised myself sometimes. For me it's about trying to get the ball off as close to the middle of the bat as possible and trust my bat swing. If I tell you everything, they'll figure me out eventually," the West Indian added. He added that the match-up against GT spinner Sai Kishore was something that really got him going. "Getting the opportunity to bat at No. 3, you need to make the play sometimes. You need to consolidate sometimes but you have to take your match-ups sometimes. They (GT) got Sai on challenging me to hit on the big side but I had to be brave and take on my match-ups. Today was one of the days it came off for me," he said. LSG skipper Pant was an unexpected opener on the day and the keeper-batter got a bit of confidence by scoring an 18-ball 21. "Definitely feeling happy... today (Mitchell) Marsh not being there gave me an opportunity (to open) and I thought the more time I spend at the wicket it'll help me going forward in the tournament," Pant said. On Pooran's another dazziling knock, he said: "I think one thing is for sure is that we are happy to have Nicholas Pooran in our team. You want someone like him on your side and not batting against you. The way he is reading the game right now, the way he is batting is phenomenal." SRH's Abhishek Sharma concedes losing four back-to-back matches was hurting

Losing four back-to-back matches was weighing on opener Abhishek Sharma's mind and he wanted to "break that streak" and help Sunrisers Hyderabad emerge from the string of defeats, which had pushed them to the bottom of the points table. Abhishek, who had been going through a poor run of form, scored a breathtaking 141 off 55 balls as SRH scripted the second-highest run chase in IPL history to return to winning ways with a comprehensive eight-wicket win over Punjab Kings in a high-scoring encounter here on Saturday. "This one is very special, because I wanted to break that losing streak. Losing four back to back matches was very tough. But we never talked about it in the team. Special mention to Yuvi paji (Yuvraj Singh) and Suryakumar (Yadav) as well. They have been in touch with me," said Abhishek whose knock helped SRH chase down a massive 245/6 with nine deliveries to spare. He said the atmosphere in the team never changed despite the defeats, which was one of the reasons SRH could chase down the big total. "The atmosphere was simple even though the batters were not doing well," he said. With his parents watching from the stands, there was all the more reason to give a sterling performance. "I have been waiting for them. My whole team was waiting for my parents because they've been lucky for SRH," he said. The opener added that the easy-paced wicket gave him options to invent and innovate his shots. "If you have seen me close enough I never play behind the wicket. But I was wanting to invent a few shots which was very easy on this wicket. It helped us both (him and opening partner Travis Head). We didn't talk anything. It was just natural play for (both of) us. The partnership boosted me up," he said. SRH skipper Pat Cummins said that his bowlers has few options to stop the flow of runs early on as the wicket was very docile. "I think you don't have too many options, it's a good wicket, the slower balls aren't really reacting, ball pings around here, so you just try." The Australian pacer said he was a big fan of Abhishek's batting. "Yeah, I'm a pretty big fan of Abhi. Look, we spoke about it before the match. We've been really happy with how everyone's going and training and the form, it just hasn't clicked. "So we didn't want to change the recipe or tear it apart. We just keep concentrating on what makes us good players and Abhi showed that first hand. The batting group particularly played quite a bit here last year. And there's a real confidence," he added. To make 245 and still end up losing the match, is something unexpected and PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer found himself in that situation at the end of the match. "It was a fantastic total (PBKS made). It has been making me laugh with the way they have chased it with two overs to spare. We could have taken two exceptional catches. "He (Abhisek) was a bit lucky as well even though he played an exceptional knock. Catches win you matches and we fell short there. We didn't bowl well but we have to go back to the drawing board. The way he smashed the ball and the opening partnership was great." This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Massive task for MI to conquer unbeaten Delhi

Delhi Capitals (DC) come home finally after starting their IPL-18 campaign in Game 4 of the tournament at Visakhapatnam, where they beat Lucknow Super Giants by one wicket on March 24. The Axar Patel-led DC will be aiming to continue their four-out-of-four winning campaign as they take on Mumbai Indians (MI) here on Sunday. For MI, it’s about getting their 2025 season back on track by notching up their second win in the competition in their sixth match. DC top the table with eight points from four games, but Mumbai lead 19-16 in the head-to-head. Also Read: Hussey: CSK have right players, not putting white flag up yet DC’s batting all-rounder Ashutosh Sharma can’t wait to hit the home turf: “I am really excited to play in Delhi. We all are happy and the mood in the squad is good and high.” However, he didn’t lose sight of the need “to stay focussed on my process.” Ashutosh revealed that at the heart of Axar’s leadership qualities was making youngsters like him feel comfortable and being open to anyone talking “anything with him.” MI, who are in eighth position in the 10-team league, have their task cut out. “We have had a lot of individual performances in the last five matches; only collective performance is missing. When everyone did well in one game, we won by a big margin [by eight wickets against KKR at Wankhede on March 31]. That shows the potential of our team,” said pacer Deepak Chahar. Chahar too was out of action for a few months due to an injury like Jasprit Bumrah, but described the latter as “very strong-headed and that is why he has made a fine comeback after months.” All eyes, however, will be on the two India stalwarts from either side — Hardik Pandya, the MI skipper and in-form KL Rahul for DC.  MI need a massive effort to conquer the so-far invincibles in IPL-18 while DC know that they can’t miss a trick against a side that boasts of the best fast bowler in the game. Over to the Kotla.

Hussey: CSK have right players, not putting white flag up yet

Chennai Super Kings batting coach Michael Hussey threw his weight behind the current squad despite a fifth straight defeat, insisting that the five-time champions have the “right players” and are not raising the white flag just yet. CSK crumbled to an embarrassing eight-wicket defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders here on Friday after recording their lowest-ever score at the Chepauk of 103 for nine. Also Read: GT’s Glenn Phillips ruled out of IPL due to injury “I still think we’ve got the right players. We’ve just got to try and help them find some confidence and consistency and then hopefully we can sort of grow and build from that, whether that’s with the bat, ball or in the field,” Hussey told the media. “There’s a lot of talk about the style of our play. But the players we’ve got, we don’t want to ask them to play in a completely different way; that’s natural to them. They’ve got here to the IPL for playing really well in their way. I’m certainly not one to get them to play in a different way. They play at their best because that’s the way they play,” he added.
