Indian batters falter against all-round England attack

Indian batters faltered against an incisive England bowling attack as the visitors raised their game in a must-win scenario to win the third T20I by 26 runs and keep the five-match series alive on Tuesday. Mohammed Shami made a solid comeback to international cricket after 14 months but it was Varun Chakravarthy's bowling effort that stood out as his five-wicket haul helped India limit England to 171/9. India should have chased down the target but the batters could only manage 145/9 in 20 overs. India still lead the series 2-1 with the fourth game scheduled in Pune on January 31. While express pace combine of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood did the job in the powerplay, Adil Rashid applied the choke in the middle overs with a skillful display of leg-spin. Unsettled by the extra pace of Archer in the first two games, Sanju Samson (3 off 6) fell to the England pacer once again while trying to hit a short of length ball out of the park. His opening partner Abhishek Sharma (24 off 14) played some crisp shots before falling to Brydon Carse. Suryakumar Yadav (14 off 7) started with a trademark pick up shot off Archer that went all the way but a similar shot attempted off Wood brought about his downfall, extending his lean run. The turning point of India's innings was the dismissal of Tilak Varma (18 off 14) who had returned not out in his last four outings including two hundreds and a half-century. It took a special ball from Rashid to send back Varma as the leg-spinner got one to turn sharply from outside the off-stump and crash into the middle stump. Hardik Pandya (40 off 35) took the game deep but was not able to take his team over the line. Earlier, England lost their way after a whirlwind fifty from Ben Duckett (51 off 28) as the in-form Chakravarthy ran through the opposition batting on a flat track. From 83 for one, England slipped to 127 for eight before Liam Livingstone (43 off 24) went on a six-hitting spree to end the innings on a high. Chakravarthy completed his second five-wicket haul in T20s when he bowled Jofra Archer with a googly. While Ravi Bishnoi (4/46 in 4 overs) and Washington Sundar (0/15 in 1) proved expensive, Chakravarthy (5/24 in four), Hardik (33/2 in 4) and Axar Patel (1/19 in 3) kept things tight from their end. Shami (0/25 in 3) did not set the stage on first but it was important that he had an incident free outing After being put in to bat, England made a promising start by coasting to 52/1. England have struggled against the Indian spinners in the series but Duckett overcame that challenge with some audacious strokeplay on way to his second T20 fifty. He danced down the track, employed the scoop and reverse hits to unsettle the opposition attack. He was the aggressor in his 76-run stand with skipper Jos Buttler (24 off 22) but the duo fell in quick succession to lose the momentum in the middle overs. Among the shots Duckett pulled off included a scoop over the keeper's head off Shami's second over. When Shami marked his run up before toss, it was confirmed that he would be playing his first international since the ODI World Cup final in November 2023. On a flat track, Shami, who replaced Arshdeep Singh as the sole specialist pacer in the playing eleven, was tasked with bowling the opening over of the match. He induced a couple of play and misses in his opening spell that read 0/15 in two overs. Shami returned to bowl the 19th over which went for 11 runs, capping off an incident free outing. He bowled balls close to 140kmph and got the ball to shape away, allaying concerns over his fitness. At 83 for one, England were on course for 200 with Duckett going all guns blazing and deep batting line-up to follow. However, the momentum shifted India's way when Chakravarthy had Buttler caught behind with the latter getting a faint tickle attempting a reverse sweep. Duck was holed out at deep mid-wicket in the following over from Axar, leaving England at 87 for three at the halfway mark. Chakravarthy removed Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton off successive balls in the 14th over to make matters worse for England.

Jasprit Bumrah relishes family time at Coldplay’s Ahmedabad concert: WATCH

Coldplay's final gig of India tour in Ahmedabad will always remain etched in the hearts of the crowd as they not only witnessed a mesmerising performance from the band but also saw the presence of Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah at the jam-packed stadium. On Tuesday, Bumrah shared a video showcasing the fun moments he spent with his family members at Coldplay's concert. "This was an experience of a lifetime. Thank you for all the love @coldplay and congratulations on the super successful shows in India. We'll see you soon," he captioned the post.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by jasprit bumrah (@jaspritb1) In the clip, Bumrah can be seen sharing smiles with his wife and mother. He could also be seen interacting with the band backstage. On January 26, Bumrah stole the spotlight when Coldplay paid a special tribute to him by dedicating a song to him during the concert. "O Jasprit Bumrah, my beautiful brother. The best bowler in the whole of cricket. We did not enjoy watching you destroy England, wicket after wicket," Coldplay's frontman Chris Martin said. Chris also played a clip of Bumrah, where the Indian fast bowler was demolishing the batters with his sheer class and pace. Coldplay also displayed Bumrah's signed Test jersey on the stage. Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the vast potential of India's concert economy, citing the success of recent high-profile concerts like Coldplay's shows in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Addressing the Utkarsh Odisha - Make in Odisha Conclave 2025, PM Modi highlighted the opportunity to further boost tourism, create jobs, and enhance the global identity of India's creative sector. He noted that India's rich cultural heritage, large youth population, and growing demand for live events make it an attractive destination for concerts. The recent Coldplay concerts, which were sold out, demonstrate the immense scope for live concerts in India. "In a country with such a rich heritage in music, dance, and storytelling, with such a large pool of youth and a massive consumer base for concerts, there are vast opportunities for the concert economy. In the past decade, both the trend and demand for live events have grown. You must have seen the incredible images from the Coldplay concerts in Mumbai and Ahmedabad in recent days. This is proof of how much scope live concerts have in India," PM Modi said. (With agency inputs)

Majhi Mumbai outclass Falcon Risers Hyderabad by six wickets in ISPL

Continuing their impressive form in the Indian Street Premier League (ISPL), Season 2, Majhi Mumbai outclassed Falcon Risers Hyderabad by six wickets to record a second consecutive victory at the Dadoji Kondadev Stadium. Chasing a target of 66 runs, Mumbai needed only 7.3 overs to wrap up the issue, losing four wickets along the way. Mumbai were off to a steady start with the openers Mohammed Nadeem and Rajat Mundhe putting together a partnership of 24 runs in the first two overs. However, the Falcons roared back into contention with some excellent display of pace bowling as Rajat Mundhe and Karan More were dismissed in consecutive overs. Hyderabad pacer Parveen Kumar put the Mumbai batters under even more pressure by clinching the wickets of Mahendra Chandan and Mohammed Nadeem in the sixth over. However, Amit Naik and Abhishek Kumar Dalhor pulled Mumbai out of trouble with their big hitting, scoring 14 runs between them in the 50-50 Challenge over. That all but sealed the issue in Mumbai's favour.  Nadeem was the top scorer for Mumbai with 25 runs off 18 deliveries while Parveen Kumar returned impressive figures of 2/3 for Hyderabad. Earlier, Hyderabad ran into trouble right away, losing a flurry of wickets early. Opener Padmesh Mhatre lasted for only two deliveries before going for a bit hit off pacer Rajendra Singh only to see Vijay Pawle pull off an excellent catch at mid off.  Mansoor KL and Kisan Satpute - the other opener - also went back in the second and third overs respectively to  leave the Falcons struggling at 8-3 after three overs. Vishwajit Thakur and Aakash Jangid tried to stich together a partnership before the Mumbai bowlers again regained the upper hand with both departing in consecutive overs. The rest of the Hyderabad batters also failed to leave their mark as the Mumbai bowlers continued to claim wickets at regular intervals. Shreyash Kadam was the only Hyderabad batter who managed to take the fight to the rival camp, smashing 31 runs off just 13 balls with 2 hits to the fence and three sixes studding his innings. Abhishek Kumar Dalhor was the most succesful bowler for Mumbai with figures of 3/25 and was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Varun Chakravarthy becomes third Indian to scalp multiple fifers in T20I history

India spinner Varun Chakravarthy delivered two exceptional deliveries in succession to dismiss Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton on consecutive balls during the third T20I against England in Rajkot on Tuesday. Chakravarthy, who had earlier removed English skipper Jos Buttler for his first wicket of the match, added to his tally with a sharp delivery that forced Smith to edge a catch to Dhruv Jurel. Smith departed after scoring six runs off four balls. On the very next ball, Chakravarthy cleaned up Overton with a stunning ripper, sending the Englishman back for a golden duck and completing a double strike. The spinner continued to trouble England, dismissing Brydon Carse for 3 runs off 4 balls with the help of Tilak Varma’s safe hands at the boundary. Chakravarthy’s brilliant spell peaked when he secured his five-wicket haul by bowling Jofra Archer for a duck on just the second ball of his innings, rounding off a sensational performance. Bumrah underscores team-first mindset after crowned Men's Cricketer of the Year

Jasprit Bumrah feels honoured after winning the prestigious ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year award but team's success would always be his priority and he picked India's T20 World Cup triumph as his most cherished moment of 2024. The 31-year-old was awarded the Sir Garfield Sobers Award on Tuesday following a remarkable 2024, where he showcased "a master-class in skill, precision, and relentless consistency" across all formats. Bumrah's stellar performance earned him accolades, including the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year on Monday and a spot in the Test Team of the Year announced last week. "I feel really good. As a youngster, I have seen my childhood heroes winning this great award, so yeah, very happy to be at the 'receiving end'," Bumrah cheekily told broadcasters. The India pace spearhead, however, said he will always prioritize team victory. "So winning the T20 World Cup was really special, and the memories that we made after that are going to be close to me forever," said Bumrah, who played a pivotal role in India's T20 World Cup campaign in the Americas, picking up 15 wickets at an astonishing average of 8.26 and an economy of just 4.17, leading India to the title. "So I will always pick us winning the T20 World Cup first." Bumrah's consistent performances across formats also earned him recognition as the fifth Indian cricketer to win the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year Award. Previous Indian winners include Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Ravichandran Ashwin (2016), and Virat Kohli (2017, 2018). "It feels really good to get honours from the legends of the game, but I always take things with a pinch of salt," Bumrah said. "I'm very happy with the honour, but I don't let myself get too high. My feet are on the ground, and I'm really happy with the accolades that I get." In the Test format, Bumrah finished 2024 with 71 wickets in just 13 matches, averaging 14.92, which was the second-best among fast bowlers, trailing only former India captain Kapil Dev's 100 wickets in 1983. The right-arm pacer was in stellar form during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under, claiming 32 wickets in five Tests. Despite India's failure to qualify for the final of the 2023-25 World Test Championship, Bumrah claimed 77 wickets, contributing significantly to India's points tally. Reflecting on his memorable wickets, Bumrah singled out Ollie Pope's wicket during the Test series against England as particularly special. "I've been very happy to play a lot of Test cricket this year, and many wickets have been special. But the one that I took against England at Vizag, the Ollie Pope, was really special because that changed the momentum and everything," he said.

Mohammed Shami makes long-awaited international return in Rajkot against England

India pacer Mohammed Shami made his much-awaited comeback as captain Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and opted to field against England in their third T20I at the Niranjan Shah Stadium on Tuesday. Shami, who last played for India in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, was sidelined for more than a year due to an ankle surgery and later faced a setback due to issues with his left knee. The 34-year-old replaced left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh who was rested for the contest. 🚨 Toss Update from Rajkot 🚨#TeamIndia have elected to bowl against England in the 3⃣rd #INDvENG T20I. Updates ▶️ https://t.co/amaTrbtzzJ@IDFCFIRSTBank pic.twitter.com/Dg321U3AQ6 — BCCI (@BCCI) January 28, 2025 Meanwhile, captain Suryakumar Yadav will also be expected to get back to his belligerent best after a prolonged lean run. Since he took over as captain last year, India have hardly put a wrong but his own form has dipped. The year gone by was the least productive for arguably the world's best T20 batter as he totalled 429 runs in 17 innings at an average of 26.81. Suryakumar averaged close to 35 in 2021, his first year in international cricket, before raising it to 45 plus in the following two years. The 34-year-old from Mumbai is yet to fire in the five-match series against England and has a point to prove following his exclusion from the ODI Champions Trophy squad. Though he is India's very own 'Mr 360', Suryakumar is at his finest when he is toying with the opposition attack with runs behind the wicket. He perished while attempting his signature pick up shot of a slower ball in the series-opener before playing one on to his stump in the last game. India hold a 2-0 lead in the five-match series after winning the first match in Kolkata by seven wickets and the second in Chennai by two wickets. England retained their playing XI for this contest. Teams: India: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Hardik Pandya, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakravarthy. England: Jos Buttler (c), Ben Duckett, Philip Salt (wk), Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Jamie Smith, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.

Kohli fine-tunes backfoot play ahead of first Ranji game in 12 years: WATCH

It was an occasion to remember for the Sanat Sangwans, Arpit Ranas and Siddhant Sharmas but for Delhi's own Virat Kohli it was business as usual on Tuesday. It seemed he had left the star outside the ground and had turned up as their very own 'Virat Bhaiya'. The 35 minute warm-up before an inconsequential Ranji Trophy final game against the Railways on January 30 was the longest that the senior team has spent to loosen up prior to net session. There was a 15-minute game of football and he had some sprints down the wide right, also enjoying a laugh or two. But once the net session started, the game face was on. He quietly walked to the nets where skipper Ayush Badoni was batting. Seeing Kohli walk towards the nets, Badoni was visibly conscious before the 36-year-old told him: "Ayush tu batting karle, phir dono switch karke karenge (Ayush you keep batting. After sometime, we will take turns to bat.)" He spent close to an hour at the nets working extensively on his troubling back foot. At first, he took throw-downs where he kept playing the pull shot. Virat Kohli working on his back foot game! 🔥 pic.twitter.com/5A7vjOsc59 — Virat Kohli Fan Club (@Trend_VKohli) January 28, 2025 Once he had done enough knocking, Kohli entered the spinners' nets where he faced left-arm spinners Harsh Tyagi and Sumit Mathur. A few balls did grip and stop but there wasn't much bite in their bowling. Ditto for pacers Navdeep Saini, Money Grewal, Rahul Gehlot and Siddhant Sharma. Unlike India nets, Kohli hardly looked troubled although he did practice leaving a lot of deliveries. With the Champions Trophy round the corner, Kohli was seen trying to play a lot beside the line of deliveries. Of late, he is concentrating on back-foot play and trying to increase his range of shots square of wicket. Obviously, before trying out in Champions Trophy, domestic cricket is good ground for a 'Pilot Episode'. "He was very happy with the surfaces. He said, practice wicket, centre strip everything is of top quality. I told him credit to our young curator Ankit Datta. He said, 'Bhaiyya mazaa aa gaya batting karke. Kal phir aaoonga batting karne,' said former U-19 coach Mahesh Bhati, who is also the administrative manager of this team. (With agency inputs)

Mumbai name 16-member squad for Tripura game sans Rohit, Jaiswal & Iyer

Defending champions Mumbai announced their 16-member squad sans India stars Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer to take on Meghalaya in their must-win Ranji Trophy Elite Group A clash starting on Thursday. Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Suryansh Shedge and Atharva Ankolekar have been called back. Mumbai, who are coming off a five-wicket defeat against Jammu and Kashmir last week, will be without the India stars Jaiswal, Iyer and Rohit, who all have joined the Indian team for the upcoming ODI series against England starting on February 6. These three players had featured in the sixth round game here at the BKC Ground, with Rohit and Jaiswal following the BCCI diktat to play domestic cricket regularly. Iyer, on the other hand, has been a vital cog in Mumbai side for domestic competitions across formats this year. The trio is also a part of the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy next month. Karsh Kothari, who also featured in Mumbai's playing XI against Jammu and Kashmir, was not picked. The defeat against Jammu and Kashmir has dented Mumbai's title defence as the Ajinkya Rahane-led side will now be required to record a big victory, with a bonus point, against Meghalaya and hope that Baroda beat the table-toppers Jammu and Kashmir in their backyard. Mumbai squad: Ajinkya Rahane (c), Ayush Mhatre, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Amogh Bhatkal, Siddhesh Lad, Akash Anand (wk), Hardik Tamore (wk), Suryansh Shedge, Shardul Thakur, Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Mohit Avasthi, Sylvester D'Souza, Royston Dias, Shreyas Gurav, Atharva Ankolekar (With inputs from PTI)

Trisha Gongadi (Pic: X)

Trisha scores first-ever ton in women's U-19 World Cup as India beat Scotland

Opener Trisha Gongadi etched her name in the record books scoring the first-ever century in Women's U-19 T20 World Cup history to power India to 150-run victory over Scotland here on Tuesday. Trisha displayed her array of strokes and slammed 110 not out off 59 balls with the help of 13 boundaries and four maximums after being sent into bat. She was ably supported by fellow opener and wicketkeeper Kamalini G (51 off 42 balls) and Sanika Chalke, who remained unbeaten on 29 off 20 balls as India scored 208 for 1 in 20 overs. In reply, Scotland cut a sorry figure as they were bowled out for 58 in 14 overs. For Scotland, openers Pippa Kelly (12) and Emma Walsingham (12) were joint top-scorers. Left-arm orthodox spinner Ayushi Shukla was the star for India with the ball returning with figures of 4 for 8, while left-armer Vaishnavi Sharma (3/5) and Trisha (3/6), after her exploits with the bat, also performed with the ball in hand. Meanwhile in other matches of the day, Bangladesh finished their campaign in style with an easy 10-wicket victory over the West Indies. The Asian side performed well with the ball to restrict the West Indies to just 54 for 6 from their 13 overs and cruised past the victory target inside nine overs on the back of an unbeaten 25 not out from opener Juairiya Ferdous. Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bowl at Bayuemas Oval after tireless effort from ground staff in the nation's capital, with spinner Nishita Akter Nishi collecting three wickets Anisa Akter Soba claimed a pair of wickets as the West Indies struggled in the conditions and Bangladesh eased home to move up to third place on the Group 1 standings. In another Group 2 match, no play was possible in Sarawak, with heavy rain leaving the Super Six contest between South Africa and the USA abandoned without a ball being bowled. South Africa had already qualified for the semi-finals of the event, while USA picked up a point to move to third in Group 2.  (With agency inputs)

Virat Kohli: Delhi's own 'Cheeku' returns, relishes 'kadhi chawal' with team

At exactly 9am when his jet black Porsche zoomed in through the Feroz Shah Kotla ground's 'Virender Sehwag Gate', it was homecoming for Delhi's very own Virat Kohli, who checked in for a training stint with his first-class team after more than 12 years. Save for pacer Navdeep Saini, all other 18 members of Delhi's squad had only seen him on TV and grown up listening to the tales of how 'Cheeku', the cherubic talent, became the 'King' of Indian cricket. In the last 15 years, Delhi's 'Cheeku' became a hazy memory as he turned into the most commercially viable brand in global cricket, the face that ICC sold in its Olympic bid presentation. VIDEO | Here's what captain of Railways Ranji Team, Pratham Singh said about their match against Delhi and facing Virat Kohli."It's more of an inspiration (that Virat Kohli is playing) and we'll be more motivated to do better because there will be a lot of eyeballs in the game.… pic.twitter.com/9moFNi4KMt — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) January 28, 2025 On Monday, he was at his home ground for around three hours and had everyone in his vicinity hypnotised. Whether the young impressionable players, or seasoned head coach Sarandeep Singh or batting coach Bantu Singh -- all of them evidently wanted to be close to him. Though courteous with all, the former India skipper seemed more comfortable with his former U-19 coach Mahesh Bhati, who is also the administrative manager of this team. "Woh badlaa nahi hain. Usko chhole-poori pasand the aur humne mangaake rakhha thaa. Usne bola chole puri nahi khawoonga (He loves chhole poori, we made arrangements for him but he said he didn't want it)," a senior DDCA (Delhi and Districts Cricket Association) official told PTI. What he did seek out after practice ahead of his first Ranji appearance in 12 years from January 30 was also an old favourite. "Practice ke baad purane time ki tarah kadhi chawal khaya sabke saath (He had kadhi chawal with everyone)," revealed the official. Everyone shadowed the icon like it was an event. Ranji Trophy matches are covered by a select bunch of domestic cricket faithfuls but on Monday, the numbers trebled. Every move by the 'King' was followed. The two coaches -- Sarandeep and Bantu -- were by his side throughout and it would be difficult for photographers or videographers to edit them from the frame. "I remember it was Ajit Chaudhary, the erstwhile manager of the Delhi Ranji team, who nicknamed him 'Cheeku' back in 2006-07," DDCA secretary Ashok Sharma, fondly called 'Mama', recollected as if it was yesterday. He has seen Kohli since he first came here for U-15 trials. The Training It was an occasion to remember for the Sanat Sangwans, Arpit Ranas and Siddhant Sharmas but for Kohli it was business as usual. Kal phir aaoonga batting karne,' Bhati said. Advice for little Kabir and his teammates A chubby fourth standard student Kabir had come with a sketch of 'Uncle Virat', who once played Delhi U-17 and U-19 cricket with his father Shavez back in the day. "We had a bat contract with BDM and would go together to pick bats. We have been friends for long," Shavez said. When Kabir was asked about his conversation with Kohli, he said: "I asked him how can I play for India? He said, 'You have to practice hard. And it shouldn't be your Papa telling you to go to practice. You should tell Papa, I have to go to practice'." And for his young Delhi colleagues, the advice was vintage Kohli. "Delhiwaale ho, dum dikhao. Shuruat accha kiya phir thande padh gaye. Positive khelo jaise Delhiwaale khelte hain," he said referring to Delhi's inconsistent season. In Form or out-of-form, 'King' will remain a 'King'. (With inputs from PTI)
