Malik had no leadership quality: Intikhab

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam had described former skipper Shoaib Malik as an "aloof" and "loner" in his report, which eventually resulted in his sacking from the helms of the cricket team.

Intikhab prepared the report after the humiliating ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka, in which he described Malik as a failed leader not capable of infusing team spirit among the players.

"We have found him incapable of being a leader. He is aloof and a loner and hardly spends any time with the players," Alam said in the report which was read out today at the hearing of the Senate Standing Committee on Sports in Islamabad.

Alam also said that the senior players didn't have enough confidence in Malik and the team was unable to gel under his leadership.

Malik, who was appointed captain after the 2007 World Cup, was asked to step down after the series loss against Sri Lanka and the Pakistan Cricket Board replaced him with senior batsman Younis Khan.

Pakistan were bowled out for its lowest total at home (75) against Lanka in the final one-dayer at Lahore, in which the hosts suffered a humiliating 234-run defeat.

Alam, who was brought in as coach last October in place of Australian Geoff Lawson, also noted in his report that Younis should be immediately appointed as captain as he was a team man and enjoyed the confidence of the other cricketers.

The report also recommended that the selectors should play leg-spinner Danish Kaneria in both Tests and one-dayers. On Malik, Alam said he had set a bad precedent by deciding to stay at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore instead of the team hotel one night before the final ODI against the islanders.

Senior players had often complained that Malik was not respectful towards them and didn't bother to involve them in team matters, Alam's report mentioned.
